Starting point is 00:00:00 In Scarborough, there's this fire behind our eyes. A passion in our bellies. It's in the hearts of our neighbors. The eyes of our nurses. And the hands of our doctors. It's what makes Scarborough, Scarborough. In our hospitals, we do more than anyone thought possible. We've less than anyone could imagine.
Starting point is 00:00:19 But it's time to imagine what we can do with more. Join Scarborough Health Network and together, we can turn grit into greatness. Donate at lovescarborough.ca. From CBC News, the world this hour, I'm Julianne Hazelwood. U.S. President Donald Trump says he's serious about Canada becoming the 51st state.
Starting point is 00:00:42 He reiterated his stance in an interview with Brett Baier of Fox News. The Prime Minister said this weekend to a group of Canadian businessmen, he was at a private meeting, he said that your wish for Canada to be the 51st state is a quote real thing. Is it a real thing? Yeah, it is. I think Canada would be much better off being a 51st state because we lose $200 billion a year with Canada and I'm not going to let that happen.
Starting point is 00:01:08 If they're a 51st state, I don't mind doing it. According to the US government, Canada had a $53 billion trade surplus with United States in 2022, the bulk of the surplus coming in oil and gas sales. Trump made the remark in an interview aired during Fox's Super Bowl pregame show. Tens of thousands of displaced Palestinians are heading north in Gaza after Israeli troops withdrew from checkpoints dividing north and south. Along with the release of hostages held by Hamas and prisoners in Israeli jails, this was a key part of the ceasefire deal. Biltley Shannach reports.
Starting point is 00:01:42 A long line of trucks and people carrying their belongings make their way across the Netzerim corridor. The road divides Gaza into north and south. Henny Al-Zanin is eager to see what's left of his home. Thank God the road was good and the army have withdrawn. Thank God for safety. Israeli pullout is a key condition of the ceasefire deal between Hamas and Israel,
Starting point is 00:02:05 the first phase of which ends in three weeks. Jack Cunningham teaches international relations at University of Toronto's Trinity College. He says negotiating the next phase will be difficult, Israel wants Hamas dismantled and Hamas wants a complete Israeli withdrawal. It's difficult to see them being reconciled unless something quite dramatic happens. And US President Donald Trump's statements about taking control of Gaza and turning it into the Riviera of the Middle East have complicated negotiations. Filthy Shannock, CBC News, Toronto. White South Africans are turning down US President Donald Trump's asylum offer.
Starting point is 00:02:45 Trump signed an executive order on Friday cutting aid to South Africa and offering to resettle white South Africans in the US. Trump claimed they were suffering discrimination under a new law that seeks to address racial inequality in land ownership. It's left three quarters of privately owned land in the hand of Afrikaners, the white descendants of Dutch and French colonists. But Flip Vies of the Afrikaner Solidarity Movement says they don't want to leave. We may disagree with the ANC, but we love the country.
Starting point is 00:03:13 As in any community, there are individuals who wish to immigrate, but the repatriation of Afrikaners as refugees is not a solution for us. We want to build a future in South Africa. The new law allows for expropriation without compensation and circumstances where it is just and equitable and in the public interest to do so. Chiefs vs. Eagles isn't the only Super Bowl matchup tonight. It's also Liberals vs. the Progressive Conservatives. Both Ontario parties have taken out ads during the big game the render at a cop reports when there's a break in the on-field action during
Starting point is 00:03:49 the Super Bowl bring on the political matchup leadership is about priorities and for seven years Doug Ford has had the wrong ones that's what fans will hear from Bonnie Crombie and the Liberals with a much different message from Doug Ford's PCs we need a need a fighter. Someone who protects us. The PC's saying their two ads will both be positive. Millions of Ontarians watch the Super Bowl and the ads are expensive. David Soberman is a marketing professor at the U of T.
Starting point is 00:04:16 It would probably be at least five or six times the cost of running an ad on regular television. The NDP also has a new ad running on TV, but not during the Super Bowl. Life in Ontario is harder than it should be. Unless you're going to duck for its friends. Ford's attacks are for someone not on the ballot. As long as Donald Trump is president,
Starting point is 00:04:37 the risk of tariffs will never go away. Once again, not mentioning his actual competition this election. Lorenda Reddacop, CBC News, Niagara-on-the-Lake. And that's your World This Hour. For CBC News, I'm Julianne Hazelwood.
