Starting point is 00:00:00 When a body is discovered 10 miles out to sea, it sparks a mind-blowing police investigation. There's a man living in this address in the name of a deceased. He's one of the most wanted men in the world. This isn't really happening. Officers are finding large sums of money. It's a tale of murder, skullduggery and international intrigue. So who really is he? I'm Sam Mullins and this is Sea of Lies from CBC's Uncovered, available now.
Starting point is 00:00:34 From CBC News, it's the world this hour. I'm Joe Cummings. A campaign is underway to get the White House to reverse course, but as it stands now, a 25% American tariff will be imposed on Canadian steel and aluminum as of March 12th. If it comes to that, our response, of course, will be firm and clear. We will stand up for Canadian workers. We will stand up for Canadian industries. That's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau saying there will be a Canadian response to the Trump trade action.
Starting point is 00:01:07 But first, the Canadian premiers are in Washington for a joint lobbying effort aimed at convincing the Trump administration that tariffs are not in their best interest. Kate McKenna has more. This is about changing minds and changing minds not just in the short term but changing minds up for the long term. Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe is pushing a message to American lawmakers. Tariffs make things more expensive and will kill Canadian and American jobs. But his message doesn't appear to be taking root. For Donald Trump hurting Canadian business is the point. Yesterday he announced a 25 tariff on steel and aluminum. Tens of thousands of Canadian jobs are directly tied to those industries.
Starting point is 00:01:49 Trump's angling to move those jobs south of the border. If we make it in the United States, we don't need it to be made in Canada. We'll have the jobs. That's why Canada should be our 51st state. Catherine Cobden is the president and CEO of the Canadian Steel Producers Association. If this is going forward, Canada, it's time to act. A senior Canadian government official says Canada is looking to build a response with its allies since this applies to every country that exports steel and aluminum into the United States. Kate McKenna, CBC News, Washington.
Starting point is 00:02:19 Ahead of the European Union, Ursula von der Leyen is saying today that U.S. tariffs will not go unanswered and will trigger harsh countermeasures from the EU. Speaking in Brussels, she says the EU will act to safeguard its economic interests and will take whatever steps are necessary to protect European workers, businesses, and consumers. Away from the tariff issue, President Trump was on Fox News last night complaining about the cost of supporting the Ukrainian war effort. We're spending hundreds of billions of dollars and, you know, they may make a deal, they
Starting point is 00:02:53 may not make a deal, they may be Russian someday or they may not be Russian someday, but we're going to have all this money in there and I say I want it back. Trump says Kiev has essentially agreed to a deal that would see Washington continue to provide military aid in exchange for Ukraine's rare minerals and resources. Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky is scheduled to meet with US Vice President, JD Vance, this Friday at a security conference in Munich.
Starting point is 00:03:21 More cracks are developing in the Israel Hamas ceasefire. Hamas has paused its release of Israeli hostages set for this coming weekend, while Israel now has its soldiers on high alert. All this as President Trump pressures Jordan to accept more Palestinian refugees. Sasha Petruszek has more. Israel's negotiating position does seem to have hardened since US President Donald Trump proposed emptying Gaza of Palestinians. That's something Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has cheered and Arab nations have flatly rejected. Former Jordanian
Starting point is 00:03:57 Foreign Minister Jawad Al Adnani. It has been proven all throughout time that every time you don't produce a fair solution to the Palestinian issue, then another war is in the blowing. Still, Trump meets with Jordan's King Abdullah in Washington today, determined to convince him to take Palestinians from Gaza. Sasha Petrusik, CBC News, Jerusalem. The tremors hitting the Greek island of Santorini appear to be getting stronger. A 5.3 magnitude earthquake was detected last night off the island's south coast.
Starting point is 00:04:33 It's the strongest recorded since the quakes began in late January. More than 11,000 people have left the island in recent weeks, and all schools have been closed, with an island-wide state of emergency in effect until at least March 3rd. And that is The World This Hour. For CBC News, I'm Joe Cummings.
