All 13 Canadian premiers are in Washington today kicking off a joint lobbying effort aimed at convincing the Trump administration to back away from its ongoing tariff threats. Kate McKenna reports. The president has an agenda and he's moving fast. Nova Scotia premier Tim Houston acknowledges the road ahead might be bumpy
Starting point is 00:01:31 as President Donald Trump appears set on tariffs. We just want to make sure that he understands the importance of relationships, that the tariffs can make things more expensive. All 13 premiers are in Washington today. They'll be holding a series of meetings trying to convince American movers and shakers that tariffs are painful and unnecessary. But Trump's position appears to have hardened. This week he announced a global tariff on steel and aluminum set to take effect mid-March
Starting point is 00:01:56 and he's still threatening a 25% blanket tariff on all Canadian goods. A White House official speaking on background says if both tariffs go ahead, they'd be stacked, resulting in a 50 percent levy on Canadian steel and aluminum. Finance Minister Dominique LeBlanc is also in Washington meeting with someone central to Trump's tariff agenda, Secretary of Commerce nominee Howard Litnick. Kate McKenna, CBC News, Washington. And while the premiers are in Washington,
Starting point is 00:02:24 the Minister of Public Safety is at the Ontario-U.S. border. David McGinty is looking to demonstrate that Canada has not forgotten its commitment to improve border security. Yesterday, the Trudeau government named Kevin Brosseau Canada's new Fentanyl Czar. And industry minister Francois-Philippe Champagne is insisting work is already well underway on the fentanyl file. We have someone who is kind of heading all these efforts, making sure that we have a one big voice on that. So I think you'll see action. Kevin Brosseau is the former Deputy Commissioner of the RCMP. After two days this week at an AI summit in Paris, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is now
Starting point is 00:03:02 in Brussels looking to expand Canada's trade and defense relationship with Europe. The PM's one-day visit to the Belgian capital includes a meeting with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte. And as well, he has talks planned with the European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and the head of the European Council, Antonio Costa. Both sides agreeing, accusing the other of violating the agreement. The Israel-Hamas ceasefire appears now to be in jeopardy.
Starting point is 00:03:32 Hamas claims humanitarian aid is being withheld from Gaza, and as a result, this weekend's hostage release will be delayed. A warning that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is calling unacceptable. Sasha Petrusik has the latest. If Hamas doesn't return our hostages by Saturday noon, Netanyahu said in a video address, the ceasefire will end, though he's been vague on how many hostages he expects. All of this has raised tensions among hostage families
Starting point is 00:04:06 protesting with signs that read don't blow the deal and among the majority of Israelis who are desperate to see the remaining 76 hostages freed. You must release them, I would like to say, yesterday. We can fight the Hamas later. Mediators from Qatar and Egypt are scrambling to save the ceasefire. Sasha Petrusik, CBC News, Jerusalem. Back to Washington, the U.S. Congress is launching a new task force to investigate what it's calling federal secrets. Anna Paulina Luna is a Republican representative from Florida. We'll be conducting investigations into the following.
