When a body is discovered 10 miles out to sea, it sparks a mind-blowing police investigation.
There's a man living in this address in the name of a deceased.
He's one of the most wanted men in the world.
This isn't really happening.
Officers are finding large sums of money.
It's a tale of murder, skullduggery and international intrigue.
So who really is he?
I'm Sam Mullins and this is Sea of Lies from CBC's Uncovered, available now.
From CBC News, the world is our.
I'm Tom Harrington.
Canada's premiers are walking the halls of power in Washington today.
They are meeting with some of Donald Trump's senior advisors at the White House.
They've been in the U.S. Capitol this week trying to convince lawmakers the president's threatened tariffs will hurt American consumers.
Kate McKenna has more.
Yes, my understanding is there's active work happening on a meeting with the White House.
Speaking in Washington, British Columbia Premier David Eby teased an afternoon meeting in the White House,
though neither he nor New Brunswick Premier Susan Holt would confirm who they're meeting with.
It's all getting worked out right now. It's a surprise.
I'm not sure if all the Premiers are going or not, I have to clarify.
In a statement, the group representing all Premiers says they're meeting with
senior advisors to the President of the United States. Because of this, all other
engagements have been cancelled this afternoon. Federal and provincial sources
say they're set to meet with Deputy Chief of Staff for
Legislative Affairs Jim Blair.
Premiers will be pushing Canada's main message that tariffs are painful and unnecessary.
Kate McKenna, CBC News, Washington.
Canada's Fentanyl Czar says he's committed to stopping the drug flow over the Canada-U.S.
border.
Kevin Brosseau's new role was created, in part,
to appease the concerns of the president. If it's one pound, ten pounds, we all know the amount of
deaths that that possibly could represent. This is a national security and a public safety crisis.
We should be focused on eliminating the scourge that is fentanyl in this country
and in the United States. Brosseau was appointed to the position on Tuesday. He visited the border in Lansdowne, Ontario,
and was briefed by law enforcement officials. Less than one percent of the fentanyl trafficked
into the U.S. actually comes from Canada. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has wrapped up his European
trip after discussing defense issues with NATO allies in Brussels. He pushed back. Against Donald Trump's accusation, Canada is not spending enough on defense.
Canada does take very seriously its responsibilities around defense, not just
of Canada, but of North America. NORAD is the only alliance in the world where two
countries have agreed to work together to protect their own homeland.
There's no other place in the world where two countries work together.
Trudeau says Canada's invested tens of billions of dollars to modernize NORAD.
That's the joint Canada-U.S. military agency that protects North American airspace.
He also argues Ottawa is increasing defense spending to the 2% NATO benchmark.
Donald Trump spoke to the leaders of both Russia and Ukraine today.
The president says negotiations to end their nearly three-year-old war will begin Friday
in Munich, adding they will be mediated by the United States.
Richard Madden has more on the developments.
The president spoke to President Putin of Russia.
They spoke at length.
White House press secretary Caroline Levitt confirms President Donald Trump discussed
arranging formal talks on ending Russia's bloody war in Ukraine with separate calls
to Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky.
They were very good calls.
They were very positive.
And the administration is wholeheartedly committed to a peace deal to end, once and for all, the Russia-Ukraine war."
This is Trump's first acknowledged call to Putin since he began his second term.
And it comes as Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth told NATO allies the U.S. would not support
Ukraine joining the alliance as a way to ensure Russia doesn't restart the war at a later
date.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio has now been tasked with leading negotiations on a peace
deal.
Ukraine's President Zelensky posting on social media, let's get it done.
Richard Madden, CBC News, Washington.
Another of the president's more controversial cabinet nominees won Senate approval today.
Nazar 52, Nazir 48 nomination is confirmed.
Tulsi Gabbard will be the director of national intelligence with all Republicans voting yes,
Democrats voting no.
Gabbard has no experience in the intelligence community and was criticized for cozying up
to dictators.
In the past, she'd had private meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin and former
Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad.
And that is Your World This Hour.
For CBC News, I'm Tom Harrington.
Thanks for listening.
