From CBC News, the world this hour. I'm Neil Herland. Canada's premiers are calling their trip to Washington a success.
Starting point is 00:00:43 It ended with a surprise visit to the White House where the premiers met with top Trump staffers. Kate McKenna has more from Washington. We had a very constructive conversation. Ontario Premier Doug Ford left the White House saying he and the other premiers had positive meetings with two top Trump staffers, Deputy Chief of Staff Jim Blair and Senior Hiring Advisor Sergio Gore. It just shows the relationship that we have and they've said it numerous times, how they respect Canada.
Starting point is 00:01:12 But that respect was not on display after the meeting when Blair posted on social media saying he'd take the Premier's comments about not wanting to become the 51st state back to the President, but also that he didn't agree with their position and that the best way to understand what President Trump plans to do is to take what he says at face value. Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc also met with Trump's pick for Commerce Secretary Howard Letnick. He shared what's being done to boost border security.
Starting point is 00:01:38 We spoke about the appointment of our Fentanyl czar who will be in Washington in a few days. Some premiers are staying in Washington to continue holding meetings trying to flood the zone with the big anti-tariff push. Kate McKenna, CBC News, Washington. Elon Musk says his cuts to the US government will improve the US economy with less federal debt and lower inflation for consumers. Musk is head of the US Department of Government Efficiency. He spoke this morning by video at the World Government Summit in Dubai. The overarching goal here is to lay the foundation for prosperity that will last many decades, you know, maybe centuries. And yeah, but it will be forever.
Starting point is 00:02:20 Nothing's forever. Late Wednesday, a US federal judge ruled that the Trump administration could go ahead with a plan to cut the American government workforce. About 75,000 workers have accepted a layoff package. The former head of Alberta Health Services has filed a $1.7 million wrongful dismissal lawsuit against her former employer and the province. Athene Mensa-Polopoulos claims she was fired because she launched an investigation and forensic audit into contracts. We're following a developing story in France. Someone threw a grenade last night at a bar in Grenoble.
Starting point is 00:02:59 Sight of the 1968 Winter Olympics, 12 people were wounded, two of them seriously. We can exclude the attack purely because there is nothing to make us think it's linked to terrorism. They say it was an act of extreme violence that may be linked to a settling of scores. Police are hunting for the attacker who fled the scene. There are warnings today of possible flooding and mudslides in Los Angeles. The concerns come five weeks after Southern California was hit by a series of deadly wildfires. Steve Futterman reports. Five weeks after the Southern California fires, heavy rains are the worry today.
Starting point is 00:03:41 With the foothills and mountains in the fire areas now without any vegetation, there is fear that there could be landslides, mudslides and debris flows. Those who live in vulnerable areas are concerned. This man lives in fire ravaged Pacific Palisades. The Palisades, of course, there are many types of homes that are on severe slopes and that could be a big problem for them. The first rains came yesterday, but they were relatively light. The National Weather Service forecasts much more severe storms today and tomorrow. This rain event does present a higher risk to our residents particularly those that are living
Starting point is 00:04:18 within the burn scars. LA County Sheriff Robert Luna says officials are prepared. Our search and rescue teams, volunteers on patrol, and incident management teams have all placed on standby. Steve Futterman for CBC News, Los Angeles.
