From CBC News, the world this hour. I'm Stephanie Scanderres. A Delta Airlines passenger jet has flipped over while landing at Toronto Pearson International Airport.
Starting point is 00:00:42 Paramedics say 15 people are hurt, three of them including a child, seriously. The Transportation Safety Board is sending investigators. Thomas Dagla has more details. Cell phone video taken from the tarmac shows the Bombardier CRJ plane on the ground upside down with damage visible on its rear underside. Several passengers are seen walking away on their own. This was a Delta Airlines flight from Minneapolis to Toronto Pearson Airport. The jet had flown from Cleveland to Minneapolis earlier in the day and was scheduled to return
Starting point is 00:01:15 to Minneapolis in the evening. But clearly now that won't be possible. Air traffic control audio posted online described this as a crash landing. It's not clear what led to this but pictures from the scene show snow on the ground with people nearby appearing to take cover from heavy wind. Thomas Daigle, CBC News, Mississauga, Ontario. And Toronto and other parts of the country are dealing with back-to-back snow storms.
Starting point is 00:01:41 The City of Toronto's General Manager for Transportation Services, Barbara Gray, says it'll be a long clean-up effort. Snow removal requires our crews to collect snow into dump trucks and remove it to designated snow routes. Due to the volume of snow that we've received in recent days, we expect that snow removal may take up to three weeks. As you know, we will be working continuously on this task and we will try to get it done as quickly as we can. Between 16 and 23 centimeters of snow fell across Toronto over the weekend. Starting point is 00:02:18 Scotia got hit with snow, ice pellets and freezing rain yesterday. Montreal broke a snowfall record with more than 70 centimeters of snow in four days. Residents there are being asked to stay home. In Washington, protesters are angry about U.S. President Donald Trump's campaign to reduce the federal government. The demonstrators also want an investigation into Elon Musk, who has been cutting programs, jobs and spending without answering to Congress. Now he's trying to get access to internal revenue service files, including confidential
Starting point is 00:02:54 information about taxpayers. This is one of several protests being held across the U.S. on Presidents Day. European leaders were in Paris earlier for an emergency meeting on Ukraine. The EU is pushing back on the US plan to develop a peace deal without involving them or Ukraine. Stephen Hoff has more from Vienna. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk says the transatlantic relationship with the United States is in a new stage and that Europe has to increase its defense spend. Speaking after meeting with other European Union leaders in Paris, Tusk says that new
Starting point is 00:03:31 spending on defense will not count towards the EU's excessive debt calculations, making it easier for countries to invest. The Danish prime minister also spoke after the meeting. I think all of us are aware that we need to support Ukraine more and stronger than we are today. Before the meeting, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said his country would be willing to send troops to Ukraine for peacekeeping, but so far no other country has made a similar announcement. The conference comes as US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and top Russian diplomats are in Saudi Arabia. They are working out the details for the meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and
Starting point is 00:04:09 American President Donald Trump that was agreed to last week. Stephen Hoff for CBC News, Vienna. In Rome, Catholics pray for the Pope's health. A group carrying a cross gathers outside St. Peter's Basilica. Pope Francis has been suffering from a respiratory infection for more than a week and was admitted to hospital on Friday. The 88-year-old's public appearances have been cancelled until at least the end of the month.
