Starting point is 00:00:00 When a body is discovered 10 miles out to sea, it sparks a mind-blowing police investigation. There's a man living in this address in the name of a deceased. He's one of the most wanted men in the world. This isn't really happening. Officers are finding large sums of money. It's a tale of murder, skullduggery and international intrigue. So who really is he? I'm Sam Mullins and this is Sea of Lies from CBC's Uncovered, available now.
Starting point is 00:00:34 From CBC News, it's the world this hour. I'm Joe Cummings. As the investigation continues into yesterday's plane crash at Toronto's Pearson International Airport, we're hearing from the survivors of the ordeal. One of them is John Nelson. When we hit, it was just a super hard hit the ground and the plane went sideways. We skidded like on our side and then flipped over on our back. There was like a big fireball out this left side of the plane.
Starting point is 00:01:05 And when we got finished, it was, I was upside down. Everybody else was there as well. Thankfully everybody was okay. Another passenger on the flight was Pete Carlson. All of us wanted to just be out of the aircraft. There was a wing there before, and when we went out that exit, there was no wing to be found. And so once we got back to a safe distance and kind of checked one another, There was a wing there before, and when we went out that exit, there was no wing to be found.
Starting point is 00:01:25 And so once we got back to a safe distance and kind of checked one another, because there's so much adrenaline and stress, by that point there was a fire truck driving towards us on the tarmac. The Delta Airlines plane arriving in Toronto from Minneapolis crashed while attempting to land and ended up rolling onto its roof. All 80 people on board survived, but 18 were taken to hospital and this morning three people are in critical condition. Canada's Transportation Safety Board is investigating. The latest inflation numbers are being released this
Starting point is 00:01:56 morning from Statistics Canada and this is the first update of the new year and possibly the last before any Trump administration tariffs take effect. Georgie Smythe has more. Colleen Wiseman is the academic director for the Master of Food and Resource Economics program at the University of British Columbia. She says January's numbers are more important than usual, as US steel and aluminum tariffs and maybe more still hang over Canada. This is the before and we'll see what the after is. If these 25% tariffs come into place,
Starting point is 00:02:32 this will be the benchmark, the marker for consumers to say, what is this really costing me? And a benchmark for general inflation and potential relief too. That will allow both the Bank of Canada and the governments at all levels to be very strategic to see where those pain points are and what they can encourage for policies. Last month Canada's central bank lowered its interest rate to three percent but it also warned it could do little to totally offset the impact of US tariffs. Georgie Smythe, CBC News, Vancouver. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met today with Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
Starting point is 00:03:14 The talks held in Saudi Arabia are believed to be the first step toward a settlement aimed at ending the war in Ukraine. Ukraine, however, is not involved, and President Vladimir Zelensky says he won't consider any agreement unless it involves full Ukrainian input. Foreign analysts are also saying that today's meeting marks another pivotal step by the Trump administration to reverse U.S. policy on isolating Russia. Another senior administrative official in the U.S. has stepped down in the face of cuts being carried out by Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency. Michelle King was the acting
Starting point is 00:03:48 commissioner of the Social Security Administration. Her resignation comes after another senior official refused to provide Musk and his team with access to the personal data of millions of Americans. Cameron McIntosh has more now from Washington. Michelle King was resisting allowing Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency, DOGE, to access the IRS's highly sensitive taxpayer data system, which would give DOGE access to sensitive and private data, including tax and health information on any American with a Social Security number. Now, Musk was alleging rampant fraud, including
Starting point is 00:04:23 dead people receiving Social Security payments. He hasn't provided any evidence. Social Security payments account for about $1.5 trillion, or a fifth of annual federal spending in the United States. Reportedly, King has been replaced by someone who will cooperate with Musk.
