From CBC News, the world this hour. I'm Neil Herland. Former Liberal MP Ruby Dalla says she's not giving up. Tonight, she announced she's appealing a decision by her party to disqualify her from the federal
Starting point is 00:00:48 liberal leadership race, and she posted an emotional video on the platform X. Please do not disqualify me. It will not send the right message for our party to immigrants and for young people and women in our country. A Liberal Party committee voted unanimously on Friday to disqualify Dala from the race to be the next leader. The party said she broke ten rules, some involving the party's expense policies. The four remaining Liberal candidates will face off in two debates
Starting point is 00:01:19 starting Monday night. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is expected in Ukraine Monday to help mark the third anniversary of Russia's invasion. Trudeau will also hold his final official meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky before Trudeau leaves office in March. Friedrich Merz will be the next Chancellor of Germany. Now Rambo Zambo think has to be clearly stated after such a result. Coalition talks will now begin to form the next German government. As tensions rise between Canada and the U.S. over Arctic sovereignty, some politicians in Nunavut had questions about it.
Starting point is 00:02:21 As T.J. Deer reports, it took place during the first two days of the Nunavut Legislative Assembly's winter session. After Nunavut's premier spoke on Radio 1's The Current about nation-building projects, an MLA had questions about one in their riding. On day one of the new session, Okumyut MLA Mary Kalikdy wondered about the rising cost of a proposed deep seaport in Kiketadjuak. Can the minister indicate what commitments he has received from the federal government and other partners to obtain the additional funding? Economic Development and Transportation Minister David Akiyakok responded in Inuktitut, saying it's up to the federal finance minister.
Starting point is 00:03:01 The premier had left question period early for a call with the first ministers. Another topic, the military's presence in Nunavut. Conservative leader Pierre Poliev had this suggestion. Build Canada's first permanent Arctic base since the Cold War. CFB Iqaluit. That's part of his plan to defend the Arctic. While Arctic sovereignty is still expected to be discussed in the coming days, the territory's operating budget is set to be tabled later today. TJ Deer, CBC News, Iqaluit. The Screen Actors Guild Awards were given out tonight to honor the best performances in TV and film.
Starting point is 00:03:34 The Vatican thriller Conclave took home the top prize for best film cast. And there was at least one surprise winner. Steve Futterman reports from Los Angeles. Just one week before the Academy Awards, the SAG Awards may have given some hints as to which performers are likely to win Oscars. And the actor goes to Timothy Chalamet. On an evening where most of the winners were expected,
Starting point is 00:03:59 there was one big surprise. Timothy Chalamet won the award for best lead male actor in a feature film for his portrayal of Bob Dylan in a complete unknown. I know people don't usually talk like that but I want to be one of the greats. I'm inspired by the greats. The favorite had been Adrienne Brody for The Brutalist. The other awards did go as expected. Best lead female actor to Demi Moore for The Substance. The supporting awards went to Zoe
Starting point is 00:04:23 Saldana for Amelia Perez and Kieran Coulkin for a real pain. There was one clear political moment during the show. Jane Fonda in accepting the Life Achievement Award. A whole lot of people are gonna be really hurt by what is happening, what is coming our way. She alluded to serious issues facing the U.S. Steve Futterman for CBC News, Los Angeles.
