Starting point is 00:00:40 On this, the third anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is among a number of world leaders who have traveled to Kyiv for talks today with President Vladimir Zelensky. Anna Cunningham reports. This is an important day for all of us. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau greeting the Ukrainian delegation at Kyiv station, arriving by train from Poland, still the safest way to enter the country three years on from Russia's full invasion. Starting point is 00:01:13 meeting. President Volodymyr Zelensky sitting with Prime Minister Trudeau and 12 other European leaders, other countries joining remotely. Prime Minister Trudeau making clear who the aggressor is in this war. Russia's actions are nothing short of a direct attack against the rules-based international order. Announcing further Canadian military aid, Trudeau said everything must be done to enable Ukraine to secure a just and lasting peace. This meeting in Kiev is a show of strength, coming after a week in which the US President
Starting point is 00:01:48 Donald Trump appeared to soften his country's stance towards Russia. Anna Cunningham, CBC News, London. German voters have elected a new chancellor. As Friedrich Mertz, leader of the centre-right Christian Democratic Union. It finishes the general election with 29% support, and Mertz now has to form a coalition government before taking office. But he's insisting that coalition will not involve the Alternative for Germany, or the AFD.
Starting point is 00:02:21 It's a far-right party that came in second in the voting. The Social Democrats, led by outgoing Chancellor Olaf Schulz, came in third. The four Liberal leadership candidates squaring off tonight in the French language debate in Montreal are meeting twice this week, just two weeks before the party picks their next leader. Janice McGregor has a preview. Janice McGregor The Quebec audience tonight is absolutely critical for the Liberal Party's fortunes. Public opinion surveys suggest that a significant part of the Liberals' recent uptick in support could be attributable to voters now thinking twice about voting for the Sovereign Disparty. Party organizers considered a long list of topics for this debate, but they landed on
Starting point is 00:03:03 four final themes Canada's place in the world, a first round that's going to include Canada, U.S. relations, then competing ideas for growing a strong economy. Third, affordability measures, housing, healthcare, and finally climate action. Party supporters are going to be filling in a ranked ballot, which means that if no front runner wins a majority of first choices, being a party's second choice might be critical. So it'll be interesting to see how aggressive the contestants get against each other tonight or whether they're going to channel it all instead on the two men waiting in the wings for whoever wins this thing.
Starting point is 00:03:38 Pierre Polly-Eve and Donald Trump. Janice McGregor, CBC News, Ottawa. With the Oscars rapidly approaching, this year's SAG Awards were handed out last night in Los Angeles. Steve Futterman has the highlights. Just one week before the Academy Awards, the SAG Awards may have given some hints as to which performers are likely to win Oscars.
Starting point is 00:03:59 And the actor goes to... Timothy Chalamet! On an evening where most of the winners were expected, there was one big surprise. Timothy Chalamet won the award for best lead male actor in a feature film for his portrayal of Bob Dylan in a complete unknown. I want to be one of the greats. I'm inspired by the greats. The favorite had been Adrienne Brody for The Brutalist.
Starting point is 00:04:21 The other awards did go as expected. Best lead female actor to Demi Moore for The Substance. The supporting awards went to Zoe Saldana for Amelia Perez and Kieran Culkin for A Real Pain. There was one clear political moment during the show. Jane Fonda in accepting the Life Achievement Award. A whole lot of people are going to be really hurt by what is happening. She alluded to serious issues facing the U.S. Steve Futterman for CBC News, Los Angeles. And that is the World This Hour.
