Starting point is 00:00:00 If you ever feel like the world is falling apart around you and there's chaos everywhere, you're not the only one. Books can help us understand that chaos and also escape from it. And on my new show Bookends, I talk to some incredible authors behind some of the best books coming out right now. Just some of the authors we've had on the show are Casey McQuiston, Brian Leo Malley, Kava Akbar, and Paula Hawkins. You can check out those conversations on Bookends with Mateo Roach wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 00:00:33 From CBC News, it's the world this hour. I'm Joe Cummings. The four Liberal leadership candidates are meeting tonight on stage for a French language debate in Montreal. For Mark Carney, Christia Freeland, Carina Gould and Frank Baylis, it's the first of two debates this week that come just two weeks before the party picks a new leader. Janice McGregor reports. The Quebec audience tonight is absolutely critical for the Liberal Party's fortunes.
Starting point is 00:01:03 Public opinion surveys suggest that a significant part of the Liberals recent uptick in support could be attributable to voters now thinking twice about voting for the Sovereignness Party. Party organizers considered a long list of topics for this debate, but they landed on four final themes. Canada's place in the world, a first round that's going to include Canada-U.S. relations. Then competing ideas for growing a strong economy. Third, affordability measures, housing, health care. And finally, climate action. Party supporters are going to be filling in a ranked ballot, which means that if no front-runner wins a majority of first choices, being a party's second choice might be critical.
Starting point is 00:01:42 So it'll be interesting to see how aggressive the contestants get against each other tonight or whether they're going to channel it all instead on the two men waiting in the wings for whoever wins this thing. Pierre Pollyev and Donald Trump. Janice McGregor, CBC News, Ottawa. On this, the third anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is among a number of world leaders who have traveled to Kyiv for joint talks today with President Vladimir Zelensky. Anna Cunningham has more. This is an important day for all of us. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau greeting the Ukrainian delegation at Kyiv station.
Starting point is 00:02:18 Arriving by train from Poland, still the safest way to enter the country three years on from Russia's full invasion. The burst of air raid sirens across Kiev this morning did not stop this meeting. President Volodymyr Zelensky sitting with Prime Minister Trudeau and 12 other European leaders, other countries joining remotely. Prime Minister Trudeau making clear who the aggressor is in this war. Russia's actions are nothing short of a direct attack against the rules-based international order. Announcing further Canadian military aid, Trudeau said everything must be done to enable
Starting point is 00:02:57 Ukraine to secure a just and lasting peace. This meeting in Kyiv is a show of strength, coming after a week in which the US President Donald Trump appeared to soften his country's stance towards Russia. Anna Cunningham, CBC News, London. There is confusion, concern and chaos today as hundreds of thousands of US federal employees begin their work week. They're facing a deadline of midnight Eastern time tonight to present Elon Musk with a detailed list of their recent accomplishments or risk losing their jobs.
Starting point is 00:03:30 Musk is heading up the Trump administration's government efficiency department. It's a problem Hyundai drivers around the world have been reporting now for quite some time. He bought the car new and now, less than 10 years later, the car's paint is peeling, bubbling, flaking off in large chunks. There are Facebook groups with thousands of people with white Hyundai's facing the same problem, and a proposed class
Starting point is 00:04:05 action lawsuit in Quebec. Driving this around basically is an advertisement against Hyundai. Emma Nixon in Melbourne, Australia has been trying for years to get the paint on her peeling 2015 hatchback fixed. It looks so bad for the brand.
