Starting point is 00:00:00 In Scarborough, there's this fire behind our eyes. A passion in our bellies. It's in the hearts of our neighbors. The eyes of our nurses. And the hands of our doctors. It's what makes Scarborough, Scarborough. In our hospitals, we do more than anyone thought possible. We've less than anyone could imagine.
Starting point is 00:00:19 But it's time to imagine what we can do with more. Join Scarborough Health Network and together, we can turn grit into greatness. Donate at lovescarborough.ca. From CBC News, the world this hour. I'm Neil Herland. The Federal Liberal Party held a French language leadership debate tonight in Montreal.
Starting point is 00:00:44 Four candidates faced off in their second language, all of them hoping to replace Justin Trudeau as Liberal leader and Canada's Prime Minister. Tom Parry reports. You've got Mark Carney, the former governor of the Bank of England, the Bank of Canada, former Deputy Prime Minister, Chrystia Freeland, another leading contender. And then you've got the two other candidates, former Liberal Cabinet Minister and Government House Leader, Carina Gould, and you've got Frank Baylis, who's a wealthy businessman who was once a Liberal MP in Quebec.
Starting point is 00:01:12 So all four of these candidates, they're debating in French. That's their second language. So this debate is maybe a little less animated than it would be if they were speaking English. Canada-U.S. relations has been a big topic. Each of the candidates is taking out their claim that they're the best choice to deal with Donald Trump. We heard Freeland underline how she was able to deal with Trump during his first administration,
Starting point is 00:01:35 negotiate a new North American free trade agreement. We heard from Mark Carney, who says that, you know, Trump has effectively torn up that deal and talk about how he wants to break down inter-provincial trade barriers, make Canada's economy more resilient. Tom Perry, CBC News, Ottawa. U.S. President Donald Trump says his threat of tariffs against Canada will go ahead. Trump made the comment at the White House during a news conference with the President
Starting point is 00:02:00 of France. The CBC's Richard Madden reports from Washington. We were in the gilded East Room of the White House for that joint press conference where the question of tariffs was brought up by a colleague and Trump essentially said that yeah, it's happening. The tariffs are going forward on time, on schedule. This is an abuse that took place for many, many years. And I'm not even blaming the other countries that did this I blame our leadership for allowing it to happen and these tariffs of course goes back to those
Starting point is 00:02:31 Initial tariffs Trump threatened to slap on Canada and Mexico linked to border security and fentanyl You'll recall Trump initially paused them until the beginning of March to kickstart negotiations And as a result Canada scrambled promising to bolster security along the northern border, appointed a fentanyl czar as the White House requested. But apparently, that's still not enough to satisfy the administration. And Trump says those tariffs are going forward and on time. Richard Madden, CBC News, Washington.
Starting point is 00:03:00 And there's another big story involving US President Donald Trump and Canada. Tonight, Trump says the Keystone XL pipeline should be built. The project was canceled in 2021 by the Biden White House. After activists fought against it for years, the pipeline was proposed in 2008 to bring oil from Alberta to refineries in the U.S. The suspect in a stabbing of a six-year-old boy in Halifax made a court appearance. The 19-year-old woman is charged with attempted murder, possession of a weapon, dangerous to the public. As Kayla Hounsell reports, investigators say the victim and suspect did not know each other.
Starting point is 00:03:39 It's a very, very tragic incident. Constable Martin Cromwell with the Halifax Regional Police says officers were called to a Maine thoroughfare in downtown Halifax Sunday afternoon. They found the child suffering from multiple stab wounds. He remains in hospital. Police say the child's parents were instrumental in ensuring the suspect remained at the scene. 19-year-old Elliott Chorney appeared in court today staring at the floor. She consented to remaining in custody until she enters her plea next month. Police say she had a knife. They also say they do not believe she knows the child. However we are asking anyone who was in the area that may have witnessed the
Starting point is 00:04:19 incident, anyone with video, to come forward and contact police. Court documents show Chorny is also facing an assault charge related to an incident last month. The documents also state she is of no fixed address. Police won't say whether she is unhoused. Kayla Hounsell, CBC News, Halifax.
