From CBC News, the world this hour. I'm Neil Herland. The four candidates running to replace Justin Trudeau as Liberal Leader and prime minister
Starting point is 00:00:45 faced off tonight in a French language debate in Montreal. Christa Freeland spoke about her experience dealing with US President Donald Trump. Because I've already done it. I've negotiated with Mr. Trump. I negotiated NAFTA, the new NAFTA, and we succeeded in getting a better agreement. Mark Carney struggled at times with his French and at one point made a blunder when talking about the war in Gaza, a mistake that Freeland jumped on. We all agree on Hamas on a two-state solution. No, we don't agree with Hamas.
Starting point is 00:01:21 No, we're against Hamas, absolutely. Yes, we're against Hamas, we are. Karina Gould questioned her own government's immigration policy. We don't agree with Hamas. The government was too ambitious with the immigration targets over the past few years, and the Liberal Party sees the importance and the value of immigration. And Frank Baylis criticized the controversial Bill 96 language law in Quebec.
Starting point is 00:01:47 It's discriminatory against young francophones who want to learn English as a second language. If I told parents, listen, you can learn math, they would say, are you crazy? Meantime, tonight the Liberal Party of Canada's Permanent Appeals Committee confirmed the decision to disqualify former MP Ruby Dalla from the Liberal leadership race. U.S. President Donald Trump says his threat of tariffs against Canada will go ahead. Trump made the comment at the White House Monday during a news conference with the President of France. Richard Madden reports. We were in the gilded East Room of the White House for that joint press conference where
Starting point is 00:02:26 the question of tariffs was brought up by a colleague and Trump essentially said that yeah, it's happening. The tariffs are going forward on time, on schedule. This is an abuse that took place for many, many years. And I'm not even blaming the other countries that did this. I blame our leadership for allowing it to happen. And these tariffs of course goes back to those initial tariffs Trump threatened to slap on Canada and Mexico linked to
Starting point is 00:02:53 border security and fentanyl you'll recall Trump initially paused them until the beginning of March to kickstart negotiations and as a result Canada scrambled promising to bolster security along the northern border, appointed a fentanyl czar as the White House requested. But apparently that's still not enough to satisfy the administration. And Trump says those tariffs are going forward and on time. Richard Madden, CBC News, Washington. And there's another big story involving US President Donald Trump and Canada.
Starting point is 00:03:23 Tonight Trump says the Keystone XL pipeline should be built. The project was canceled in 2021 by the Biden White House after activists fought against it for years. The pipeline would move oil from Alberta to refineries in the U.S. The suspect in a stabbing of a 6-year-old boy in Halifax made a court appearance. Starting point is 00:03:45 is charged with attempted murder and possession of a weapon. Kayla Hounsell has more. It's a very, very tragic incident. Constable Martin Cromwell with the Halifax Regional Police says officers were called to a Maine thoroughfare in downtown Halifax Sunday afternoon. They found the child suffering from multiple stab wounds. He remains in hospital. Police say the child's parents were instrumental in ensuring the suspect remained at the scene. 19-year-old Elliott Chorney appeared in court staring at the floor. She consented to remaining in custody until she enters her plea next month. Police say she had a knife. They also say they do
Starting point is 00:04:23 not believe she knows the child. However, we are asking anyone who was in the area that may have witnessed the incident, anyone with video, to come forward and contact police. Court documents show Chorney is also facing an assault charge related to an incident last month. The documents also state she is of no fixed address. Police won't say whether she is unhoused.
