Starting point is 00:00:35 I'm Joe Cummings. With polling stations now open, today is Election Day in Ontario. A winter election call, of course, is rare in Canada. And as we hear now from John Northcott, the winter weather was definitely an issue over the course of the campaign. It's the first provincial election in the depths of winter in decades. Massive snowstorm after massive snowstorm, socked in air travel, frustrated commuters, cancelled classes,
Starting point is 00:01:01 and made for some challenging door knocking for candidates. This, as more bad weather is set to hit much of the province. Whether it's the snow and slush or voter apathy, Elections Ontario says advanced voting numbers are down, with just over 6% of those eligible making the early effort to make their choice. That's the weather. Now there's the weather. Whether or not US President Donald Trump imposes tariffs on Canadian products. The election was called by Doug Ford, ostensibly, to fight the potential tariffs. About 35% of Canadians live in Ontario, and many of them work in industries that would
Starting point is 00:01:35 be hit hard. All of Ford's opponents oppose the possibility of tariffs, but argue that there are other important issues as well. Health care, education and housing. Search teams have been deployed to the landfill looking for the remains of Morgan Harris and Mercedes Moran. Both First Nations women were murdered three years ago by a serial killer, and the federal
Starting point is 00:02:33 and provincial governments have each committed $20 million to the search effort, which Canoe says was the right decision. I think we've always understood that searching a landfill was the right thing to do, but with the disclosure of potential human remains being found today, I think we can also say it was a realistic and a reasonable thing for us to do. Canoe says the forensic identification process could take weeks. Canada's Crown Indigenous Relations Minister is apologizing today to Inuit families for the government's role in the Dundas Harbor relocations of the 1930s and 40s.
Starting point is 00:03:10 The relocation was part of Canada's strategy at the time to maintain a national security presence in the Arctic, and it led to dozens of Inuit families being separated from their ancestral lands. Israel says Hamas is handed over the bodies of four Israelis who had been held hostage in Gaza. The handover took place today with Hamas confirming that 600 Palestinian prisoners had been released by Israel. Most of those detainees were returned to Gaza. Hamas is saying now the swap means it is ready to negotiate phase two of the ceasefire. Two-time Oscar-winning actor Gene Hackman has
Starting point is 00:03:45 died. The 95-year-old was found dead yesterday with his wife at their home in New Mexico. Steve Futterman reports. Officials in Santa Fe right now are giving just the basic facts that Gene Hackman, his wife, and their dog were all found dead yesterday afternoon. There's no indication how long they had been dead. No specific cause of death is being given, but the Sheriff's Department is pointing out there does not appear to be any foul play. So the deaths continue to be investigated. Now Gene Hackman appeared in numerous films throughout his half century career. Among his most famous films, 1971, The French Connection,
Starting point is 00:04:23 1992, The Unforggiven he won Oscars for both of those performances he also gained a great deal of fame for his portrayal in the Superman films as one of Superman's arch enemies Lex Luthor he last appeared on the big screen in 2006 in 2008 he confirmed he had retired.
