Starting point is 00:01:07 From CBC News, the world this hour, I'm Claude Fague. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is on his way to London this morning. He'll meet with European leaders following Friday's White House confrontation between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Donald Trump. Anna Cunningham reports from London. French President Emmanuel Macron giving Zelensky his support days after he sat in that same chair in the White House saying if anyone is playing at World War III it's Vladimir Putin. European Union Chiefs Circele von der Leyen and Antonio Costa giving Zelensky
Starting point is 00:01:46 their assurances that he was never alone. In Germany the man likely to be its next Chancellor Friedrich Merz sending Zelensky his backing. Britain's Prime Minister Keir Starmer just back from his White House visit has reaffirmed his unwavering support for Ukraine. He is the only leader to have confirmed that he spoke to both President Zelensky and Trump last night. No details about the calls have been released but Sarma is attempting to be the bridge between Washington, Kiev and Europe. Anna Cunningham, CBC News, London. And that heated exchange between Zelensky and US President Donald Trump prompted this
Starting point is 00:02:25 response from the Ukrainian leader, Richard Madden reports from Washington. This kind of spat is not good for both sides. Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky reacting to that shocking exchange and berating from President Donald Trump inside the Oval Office hours earlier. Ukraine wants peace and we will have. Solensky went on conservative-leading Fox News, insisting Ukraine needs the U.S. to guarantee its security because Russia President Vladimir Putin can't be trusted to honor any peace deal. It will be difficult for us. That's why I'm here. That's why we speak about the future negotiations.
Starting point is 00:03:05 It will be difficult without your support. The two leaders were supposed to sign a deal giving the U.S. rights to Ukraine's critical minerals in a move believed to be the first step to a ceasefire. But those plans went off the rails, with Zelensky reportedly booted from the White House, returning home with no deal, and America's continued support for Ukraine? More uncertain. Richard Madden, CBC News, Washington. The first phase of the ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas has ended. The negotiating teams from both sides are returning from Cairo, but no sign of a new deal yet.
Starting point is 00:03:41 Egyptian sources say Israel wants six more weeks of the current deal, while Hamas wants a second phase and an end to the war. The CBC's Sasha Petrosic reports from Jerusalem. The talks in Cairo have not ended, but they're not making much headway either. Hamas has said that it is rejecting Israel's formulation to extend the first phase of the ceasefire, a phase which actually ends formally today, and has delivered 33 hostages out of Gaza, Israelis, and in exchange released some 2000 Palestinians from Israeli prisons. But Israel wants to continue releasing more hostages without moving on to phase two, because it doesn't really want to pull out of Gaza with its military.
Starting point is 00:04:29 And that's one of the conditions of that second phase. It's something that Hamas really wants. And therefore, it is reluctant to simply extend the first phase because it sees those hostages as the only way to push Israel to get out of Gaza and effectively end the war. Sascha Petrusik, CBC News, Jerusalem. Liberal leadership candidate Krischer Freeland appeared on the show Real Time with Bill Maher on Friday night and spoke about the proposed tariffs from the U.S. You're our neighbours and it was just a shock for Canadians. The President of the United States is saying repeatedly
Starting point is 00:05:07 that he wants to use economic coercion to force us to become the 51st state. I take it seriously and Canadians do too. Real Time with Bill Maher is seen in Canada on Crave. And that is Your World This Hour. For CBC News, I'm Claude Fague.
