From CBC News, The World is Sour. I'm Neil Kumar. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has arrived in London to join European leaders at a summit on Ukraine.
Starting point is 00:00:42 The summit will look at how to secure Ukraine's security and it's happening today. Tom Perry reports. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau touched down in London Saturday evening. He'll join European leaders on Sunday at a summit hosted by UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Starmer was in Washington this week meeting with US President Donald Trump. That was before Trump sat down with Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky at a meeting in the Oval Office, in which Trump and his Vice President berated Zelensky and called him ungrateful for American support. Ralph Goodale, Canada's High Commissioner to the UK, says that meeting was tough to watch. It was very difficult to see Mr. Zelensky have to suffer through that very difficult
Starting point is 00:01:26 situation and it will be good to hear world leaders together saying how much they stand in support of Mr. Zelensky and Ukraine. Goodale says despite that difficult meeting, it's critically important the U.S. stay engaged in Ukraine. Tom Perry, CBC News, London. In the United States, reaction to the Oval Office fracas has been mixed. Many experts are critical, while many Republicans are backing Trump. Steve Futterman has more. The fallout continues, along with concern about a potentially seismic shift in the nearly
Starting point is 00:02:01 century-old U.S. policy of supporting Western European democracies. John Bolton, who served as national security advisor during Trump's first term, blasted his former boss. It's a disaster for the security of the West as a whole. We've got an American president and vice president who have now unequivocally taken Russia's side. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is critical of Zelensky and says Trump is trying to come up with a way to end the war.
Starting point is 00:02:30 President Trump's made deals his entire life. He's not going to get suckered into some deal that's not a real deal. Trump supporters blame Zelensky for the confrontation, including some Republicans who have historically been strong opponents of Vladimir Putin. It's a long way from the days of Ronald Reagan calling the Soviet Union the evil empire. Steve Futterman for CBC News, Los Angeles. Muslims around the world are marking the start of Ramadan, a time of fasting, prayer and spiritual reflection, with thousands gathering nightly at mosques for prayers and iftar, the sunset meal that breaks the daily fast.
Starting point is 00:03:05 But Imam Osama Raja with Surrey's Jumiya Mosque says the holy holiday is about more than just fasting. This month is about reconnecting to Allah and this month is about helping others in need. Whether they're Muslims, non-Muslims, whatever race they're from, whatever background they're from, this month is about helping people. In B.C.'s Lower Mainland, preparations are underway for Ramadan Fest, a new nighttime festival that begins next week.
Starting point is 00:03:32 In time to get your snacks planned for tonight's Oscars, Conan O'Brien will be hosting for the first time. And it's a wide open field for many of the categories. CBC's Eli Glasner tells us some of the hot tips for Hollywood's biggest night. The Oscars red carpet is getting ready. Lights and cameras positioned when the LA wildfires ravaged this city. Some wondered if the awards would continue. Now there's a feeling the industry needs this, according to Variety's Clayton Davis.
