Starting point is 00:00:00 In Scarborough, there's this fire behind our eyes. A passion in our bellies. It's in the hearts of our neighbors. The eyes of our nurses. And the hands of our doctors. It's what makes Scarborough, Scarborough. In our hospitals, we do more than anyone thought possible. We've less than anyone could imagine.
Starting point is 00:00:19 But it's time to imagine what we can do with more. Join Scarborough Health Network and together, we can turn grit into greatness. Donate at lovescarborough.ca. From CBC News, the world this hour. I'm Claude Fague. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer this morning announced a ceasefire plan as European leaders, including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, along
Starting point is 00:00:46 with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, meet in London. The CBC's Anna Cunningham reports from Downing Street. We are told that the focus is going to be on how Europe, along with Canada, can support and strengthen Ukraine's position ahead of any negotiations for peace and also ensuring that a deal doesn't sell out Ukraine. The Prime Minister of Britain has talked about this being an issue, wanting the US backstop. It's really a sticking point. And he says that there have been intense discussions around this.
Starting point is 00:01:21 European countries have to do more and provide a security guarantee but I've always been clear that that is going to need a US backstop because I don't think it would be a guarantee without it. I don't think would be a deterrence without it. So the two have to go together. Evidently King Charles is interested in talking with President Zelensky, given that his country has given its full backing to Ukraine. Anna Cunningham, CBC News, London. Justin Trudeau is likely going to be the only non-European leader in attendance as the groups gather to set conditions for a lasting peace in Ukraine
Starting point is 00:01:58 by preventing Russia from launching another invasion on the continent. Trudeau will also have a bilateral meeting with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer today. Israel has blocked all humanitarian aid from entering Gaza. The move comes after the first phase of its ceasefire with Hamas ended yesterday, and it's meant to put pressure on the militant group to accept a U.S. proposal for the extension of that first phase. Sasha Petrusic reports. Israel says that it has accepted a U.S. proposal
Starting point is 00:02:29 for a continuation of the first phase of the ceasefire that ended yesterday through Ramadan and through the Israeli holidays of Passover that would take us close to the end of April on the condition that Hamas release half the remaining hostages now and release the remainder of those hostages at the end of that process. And Foreign Minister Gideon Saar said this morning that the next step is to cut off all aid until Hamas agrees to this US proposal.
Starting point is 00:03:05 And our position is that during negotiations, hostages should be released. We will have to see whether there is a breakthrough as a result of this hardball. But in the meantime, people in Gaza seem to be the ones who are going to be left without aid, at least for the time being. Sasha Petrusik, CBC News, Jerusalem. A private company has successfully landed a lunar vehicle on the moon. Y'all set the landing, we're on the moon.
Starting point is 00:03:35 Woo! Woo! Woo! Woo! Firefly Aerospace just became the first commercial company in history to complete a fully successful moon landing. Firefly Aerospace, a startup company that began their quest to get to the moon a decade ago, landed the Blue Ghost Lander on autopilot this morning on the moon's northeastern edge.
Starting point is 00:03:58 The two-meter-tall vehicle landed 10 experiments to the moon that came from NASA. The lander was launched in mid-January. And finally, Elon, we love your outfit. Very official and respectful. I love when he gets that chainsaw right next to my head. Thanks. Donald, what are you doing in my office? Part of SNL's cold open last night featured Canadian Mike Myers as Elon Musk alongside James Austin Johnson as Donald Trump. This was Myers' first appearance on the sketch comedy show in 10 years.
Starting point is 00:04:37 He also appeared for the clothes of the show in a black t-shirt that read Canada is not for sale. Calgary's Tate McCray was the musical guest. And that is your World This Hour. For CBC News, I'm Claude Fink.
