Starting point is 00:00:00 In Scarborough, there's this fire behind our eyes. A passion in our bellies. It's in the hearts of our neighbors. The eyes of our nurses. And the hands of our doctors. It's what makes Scarborough, Scarborough. In our hospitals, we do more than anyone thought possible. We've less than anyone could imagine.
Starting point is 00:00:19 But it's time to imagine what we can do with more. Join Scarborough Health Network and together, we can turn grit into greatness. Donate at lovescarborough.ca. From CBC News, the world this hour. I'm Jasmine Sepulis. U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick says tariffs will be levied on Canadian and Mexican goods on
Starting point is 00:00:45 Tuesday. But it's not clear if President Trump will make those tariffs 25 percent. They have done a lot, so he's sort of thinking about right now how exactly he wants to play it with Mexico and Canada, and that is a fluid situation. There are going to be tariffs on Tuesday on Mexico and Canada, exactly what they are. We're going to leave that for the president and his team to negotiate. Lutnick also said the U.S. will levy an additional 10 percent tariff on Chinese goods. European and NATO leaders have wrapped up their meeting on how to continue supporting Ukraine
Starting point is 00:01:21 in its battle against Russia's invasion. U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer organized the meeting and says they've come up with a four-part plan. First, we will keep the military aid flowing and keep increasing the economic pressure on Russia. Second, we agreed that any lasting peace must ensure Ukraine's sovereignty and security, and Ukraine must be at the table.
Starting point is 00:01:46 Third, in the event of a peace deal, we will keep boosting Ukraine's own defensive capabilities to deter any future invasion. Fourth, we will go further to develop a coalition of the willing to defend a deal in Ukraine. The UK is prepared to back this with boots on the ground and planes in the air together with others. Europe must do the heavy listing." Stummer also said US involvement was essential and he does not see Washington as an unreliable ally. Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio defended President Donald Trump
Starting point is 00:02:25 after he berated UK President on live television on Friday. Rubio says Trump is focused on peace. And the sooner everyone grows up around here and figures out that this is a bad war that's heading in a bad direction, that could spiral into a broader conflict, the sooner people grow up and realize that, I think the more progress we're going to be able to make. The meeting between Trump and Zelensky, I think the more progress we're going to be able to make. The meeting between Trump and Zelensky was arranged so the two could sign a deal on Ukrainian critical minerals. In the end, no deal was signed and Zelensky
Starting point is 00:02:54 was thrown out of the White House. One day after the first phase of the Gaza ceasefire ended, Israel is again blocking all humanitarian aid from entering the occupied territory and demanding that Hamas accept a US proposal for the extension of that first phase. Sasha Petrasek explains. Israel says that it has accepted a US proposal for a continuation of the first phase of the ceasefire that ended yesterday through Ramadan and through the Israeli holidays of Passover that would take us close to the end of April on the condition that Hamas release half the remaining hostages now and release the remainder of those hostages at the end
Starting point is 00:03:39 of that process. And Foreign Minister Gideon Saar said this morning that the next step is to cut off all aid until Hamas agrees to this U.S. proposal. And our position is that during negotiations, hostages should be released. We will have to see whether there is a breakthrough as a result of this hardball. But in the meantime, people in Gaza seem to be the ones who are going to be left without aid at least for the time being. Sasha Petrusik, CBC News, Jerusalem. A federal by-election has been called for April 14th in the riding of Halifax.
Starting point is 00:04:20 The seat had been vacant since MP Andy Fillmore stepped down to run successfully for Mayor of Halifax. If a general election is called before April 14th, the by-election would be cancelled and candidates would run in the general election. And the 97th Academy Awards will be handed out tonight in Los Angeles. And there are some Canadian nominees, Quebec director and producer Denis Villeneuve. And that is your World This Hour.
