With the Trump administration firing the first shot, a Canada-U.S. trade war is now on. U.S. tariffs on Canadian imports went into effect at midnight. And later this morning, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will have the details on Canada's response. Janice McGregor reports. Trudeau's cabinet seems to be pulling its retaliation strategy off the shelves. We have a list of imported products the government says adds up to the first $30 billion worth of targets.
Starting point is 00:01:42 But it's not going to stop there. Ontario's Doug Ford as chair has already been talking to other premiers and he's hot to respond. Starting point is 00:02:31 As for Prime Minister Trudeau, he has a news conference scheduled for Ottawa this morning at 1030 Eastern. His office says the Prime Minister will be joined by Finance Minister Dominique LeBlanc, Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Jolie, and Public Safety Minister David McGinty. Along with targeting Canada and Mexico, the United States is also taking tariff action against China, and Beijing is responding today with counter tariffs and is also limiting some American companies from doing business in China. Laura Westbrook has more.
Starting point is 00:03:00 Laura Westbrook The response from Beijing was swift, with 15 percent tariffs on imports of American chicken, wheat, corn and cotton, and 10 percent levies on soybean, beef and fruits, China's Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jiang says Beijing is willing to talk, but it won't be bullied. If the United States has ulterior motives and persists in waging a trade war, a trade war or any other kind of war, the Chinese side will fight them to the bitter end." China is a major importer of American farm products. Economist Gary Ung says Beijing is sticking with its playbook of targeted tariffs. This move reflects China's strategy in using its economic power and creating an impact
Starting point is 00:03:46 on the U.S. corporate revenue. The tariffs coincide with the start of China's rubber-stamp parliament meeting Wednesday, with China's slowing economy topping the agenda. Laura Westbrook for CBC News, Hong Kong. Meanwhile, away from the economic front, the Trump White House has announced it is pausing all its military aid to Ukraine. U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance appeared last night on Fox News, saying it's a move aimed at forcing Ukraine to consider any future potential U.S.-Russian ceasefire proposal.
Starting point is 00:04:16 The president is actually taking a much more realistic perspective in saying, this can't go on forever. We can't fund this thing forever. The Ukrainians can't fight forever. So let's bring this thing to a peaceful settlement. In the midst of all this, a proposed European defense plan worth more than 800 billion euros is in its final stages. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen says the Rearm Europe package will be
Starting point is 00:04:41 put to the 27 EU leaders during a meeting this week in Brussels. Now to the measles outbreak in Texas. It's not unusual. We have measles outbreaks every year. From a Cabinet meeting last week, that is U.S. Health Secretary Robert Kennedy Jr., the Texas outbreak has grown now to nearly 150 confirmed cases and one death. As for Kennedy's claim that it's not unusual, health officials say the last outbreak of this size in the state was more than 30 years ago, and the fatality was the first in the
