From CBC News, the world this hour. I'm Neil Herland. We begin in Washington where U.S. President Donald Trump is addressing the American Congress this hour,
and Canadians will be watching closely.
There is some speculation the tariff Tuesday could be followed by walk back Wednesday
US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick says Trump may be considering a compromise with Canada and Mexico
The trade war underway is apparently tied to the flow of fentanyl and migrants into the US
Lutnick told Fox Business. He's been speaking to Canadian and Mexican officials about what Trump might
do next.
I think he's going to work something out with them.
It's not going to be a pause, none of that pause stuff, but I think he's going to figure
out you do more and I'll meet you in the middle some way and we're going to probably be announcing
that tomorrow.
So somewhere in the middle will likely be the outcome, the president moving with the
Canadians and Mexicans, but not all the way.
Earlier today, Trump gave little indication he was willing to consider exemptions for
certain imports.
The federal government is talking tough as a trade war with our closest ally begins.
Tariffs of 25% are now in place from the U.S. on goods from Canada and Mexico.
Canada is fighting back with tariffs on $30 billion worth of products from the U on goods from Canada and Mexico. Canada is fighting back with
tariffs on 30 billion dollars worth of products from the US. And as Tom Perry
reports, that's just the beginning. So today the United States launched a trade
war against Canada. Justin Trudeau says Canada never wanted a fight with a
country that's supposed to be its closest ally but in an address broadcast
live on US news channels the Prime Minister delivered a firm message
to the American people and their president. Now it's not in my habit to
agree with the Wall Street Journal but Donald they point out that even though
you're a very smart guy this is a very dumb thing to do. Trudeau says Canada
will fight back with reciprocal tariffs on $155 billion worth of U.S. goods.
He says Donald Trump is making a bogus claim when he says his tariffs are being brought
in because Canada is allowing fentanyl into the U.S.
Trudeau says the real reason may be that Trump hopes to weaken the Canadian economy and make
it easier to take over the country.
Tom Perry, CBC News, Ottawa.
The President of Mexico says there is no reason or justification for the tariffs.
No hay motivo, razón, ni justificación.
Claudia Schoenbaum says she will announce a counter package of tariff and non-tariff
measures this Sunday. China also responded by imposing additional tariffs
of up to 15 percent on imports of key American farm products. They include
chicken, pork, soy and beef. China has also restricted some US companies from
doing business in its territory. To other news now, Ukrainian President Volodymyr
Zelensky says the Oval Office meeting did not go the way he was supposed to.
Striking a remorseful tone in a lengthy post on the platform X, he wrote, it is time to
make things right.
As Crystal Gamancing reports, the comments come after the U.S. paused weapons shipments
to Ukraine.
You haven't been alone.
You haven't been alone.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky appears to want to bury the hatchet.
Writing on social media, he and his team stand ready to work under President Donald Trump's
strong leadership to get a peace that lasts.
Saying last week's meeting in Washington was regrettable.
It's very hard to fight without the ammo.
On the streets of Kiev, Ukrainians expressed concern as the U.S.
said it was freezing all weapons aid to Ukraine.
A move James Nixie of the London based think tank Chatham House described
as a devastating blow.
It gives the Russian side, if nothing else, a morale boost.
Zelensky stopped short of apologizing, but said he is ready to work fast to end the war
and sign the minerals deal with the U.S. Crystal Gamansing, CBC News, London.
Buffy St. Marie says she has returned her Order of Canada.
The singer was stripped of the honor after a CBC investigation questioned her claims
of indigenous heritage.
And that is your World This Hour.
