Starting point is 00:00:00 What does a mummified Egyptian child, the Parthenon marbles of Greece and an Irish giant all have in common? They are all stuff the British stole. Maybe. Join me, Mark Fennell, as I travel around the globe uncovering the shocking stories of how some, let's call them ill-gotten, artifacts made it to faraway institutions. Spoiler, it was probably the British. Don't miss a brand new season of Stuff the British Style. Watch it free on CBC Gem. From CBC News, the world this hour, I'm Julie-Ann Hazelwood. Donald Trump is again threatening to impose new tariffs on Canada,
Starting point is 00:00:41 this time targeting dairy and lumber. Canada has been ripping us off for years on tariffs for lumber and for dairy products. 250 percent tariff. They'll be met with the exact same tariff unless they drop it. And we may do it as early as today or we'll wait until Monday or Tuesday. But that's what we're going to do. We're going to charge the same thing. It's not fair.
Starting point is 00:01:03 Never has been fair. Ottawa says it's making $1 billion in new financing available to help farmers in addition to a $5 billion trade impact program to help Canadian businesses and workers weather the crisis. Conservative leader Pierre Polyaev approves of at least one decision the liberals have made, the move to leave Canadian counter tariffs on US on U.S. goods, even though Trump has paused some U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods. We can't have half measures. We have to send a clear message to President Trump that if he wants to fight, then we will
Starting point is 00:01:35 fight back. We will defend our people and our country. The president must remove all tariffs on Canadians before we remove counter tariffs on the Americans. Polly is still critical of the Liberals on a long list of economic issues. The March break travel season is on and it turns out a growing number of Canadians are deciding against traveling to the US. Linda Ward has the details. Leisure bookings to American cities are down. We're hearing from Flight Centre Travel Group Canada who says that they have dropped 40% in February from the same month last year and we're also hearing numbers from a
Starting point is 00:02:14 number of airlines as well. Air Canada is offering 10% fewer flights to Florida, Arizona, Las Vegas, popular Sun destinations for Canadians at this time of the year. WestJet is reporting a shift in bookings from the U.S. to Mexico and the Caribbean. Flares, U.S.-bound flights are down 24% year over year for March, and Sunwing Airlines has just scrapped all its U.S. flights altogether. And it's not just that people aren't booking, but they're also cancelling. One in five customers cancelled their trips to the United States over the past three months. Flight Centre now also says it has seen a pause in business travel to the United States. And if that gets worse, that would have a much larger impact.
Starting point is 00:02:59 Linda Ward, CBC News, Toronto. The Supreme Court of Canada has ruled that on Ontario law limiting third-party election ads violates the charter right to vote. The court says the $600,000 limit on advertising in the year before a fixed election date allowed political parties to drown out the voices of third parties and undermine voters' rights to make an informed decision. Canada's top doctor is warning Canadians about the surge in measles cases in this country and around the world. They're
Starting point is 00:03:30 saying it could get worse with families traveling over the March break. Jennifer Yoon reports. It's only March and already Canada has seen more measles cases this year than all of last year. There are over 200 cases in several provinces. The majority of 200 cases in several provinces. The majority of the cases are in unvaccinated kids, catching the virus in places like daycares and schools. Many have been hospitalized, says the Public Health Agency of Canada. There's a global measles alert right now.
Starting point is 00:03:58 Peel Public Health's Dr. Rebecca Shalansky is worried about more cases being imported from abroad. Two in Brampton and Mississauga were reported. She has this warning for March break. No matter where you're going, I would say it's very important to be up to date with your measles vaccination. There's no cure to the highly contagious disease. The only protection is vaccination.
Starting point is 00:04:19 Shout out for Yoon, CBC News, Toronto. Buffy St. Marie is losing her Juneau Awards and her place in the Canadian Music Hall of Fame. The Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, or CARIS, says St. Marie was not eligible. She recently confirmed that she is an American citizen, not Canadian. For the same reason, her Polaris prizes are being revoked. And that is your World This Hour.
Starting point is 00:04:48 For CBC News, I'm Julianne Hazelwood.
