From CBC News, The World This Hour, I'm Julianne Hazelwood. Manitoba's premier is praising the families of women slain by a serial killer
Starting point is 00:00:42 for doggedly fighting to have a landfill near Winnipeg searched for their loved ones. This week, remains were identified as one of the victims. Bartley Keeves has more. RCMP announced Friday that remains found at the Prairie Green landfill north of Winnipeg belonged to 39-year-old Morgan Harris. Her remains were found three months after excavation started as part of a search for
Starting point is 00:01:03 Harris and 26-year-old Mercedes Myron. Serial killer Jeremy Skibitzky murdered Harris, Myron and two other First Nations women in Winnipeg in 2022. Their families pushed for two years to search the landfill after the Winnipeg police service and Manitoba's former PC government opted not to do so. Manitoba Premier Wab Kanu said he hopes the discovery of Harris's remains brings closure to her family. For the Harris family, we can now say that the thing that we didn't know whether or not we would be able to accomplish,
Starting point is 00:01:37 we knew that we were going to try. We can now say that we've been able to deliver on that attempt. Another set of human remains found at the landfill has yet to be identified. Bartley Kivas, CBC News, Winnipeg. Toronto police are looking for three suspects in a mass shooting. A dozen people were injured at a pub last night, six with gunshot wounds. But no one has life-threatening injuries. Nicole Williams has the latest.
Starting point is 00:02:04 This was a brazen and reckless act of violence. Superintendent Paul McIntyre says three men entered a Scarborough pub named the Piper's Arms and opened fire. Security footage viewed by police shows a horrifying scene. The men wearing masks, one with an assault rifle, the other two with handguns. These guys just looked at the crowd and opened fire. It was horrible. Those inside eating or drinking immediately ducking for cover. Some falling to the floor after being shot.
Starting point is 00:02:35 12 people were injured, six with gunshot wounds, but amazingly none have life-threatening injuries. And at this point police don't know what the motive was. Mayor Olivia Chow this morning. I'm deeply troubled by this kind of mass shooting. Over social media, Ontario Premier Doug Ford threw his support behind Toronto police who are now on the hunt for the three suspects seen driving away. Nicole Williams, CBC News, Ottawa.
Starting point is 00:03:03 Canada has been hit with yet more terrorists but this time they're from China. Beijing is announcing retaliatory tariffs on some Canadian agricultural imports. As of March 20th, Beijing will apply a 100 percent tariff on canola oil, oil cakes and peas, and 25 percent on pork and other products. China says the move is in response to Ottawa's decision last October to match the 100% tariff the US imposed on Chinese electric vehicles. Australian authorities say one person is dead as a tropical storm continues to lash the country's eastern coasts. New South Wales state premier Chris Minns is warning residents. This emergency is not over. The rain is continuing and expected to keep falling in the days ahead. Officials say the storm, formerly known as Cyclone Alfred, made landfall near Brisbane on Saturday. Hundreds of thousands of people are facing power outages after violent winds toppled power lines. Dozens of communities are under evacuation orders.
Starting point is 00:04:02 Authorities expect flooding to continue over the next few days. Women around the world are calling for equal pay, reproductive rights, and an end to gender-based violence during demonstrations marking International Women's Day. In New York City, Women's rights are under attack. What do we do? Stand up like that! hundreds protested what they describe as growing threats to women's rights and civil liberties
Starting point is 00:04:26 under the Trump administration. This year's global theme at Women's Day marches was accelerate action.
