Starting point is 00:00:00 The following is advertiser content from Audible. Tune out everyday stresses and noise with best-selling author Susan Cain's A Quiet Life in 7 Steps and begin your year by learning to live a little more peacefully. Listen to a sample now. Should is a word that can take us away from our truest selves, while the quiet way can lead us back. Of course, we can't blame ourselves for getting lost in life's shoulds. Like, I should go to that party.
Starting point is 00:00:28 I should volunteer for that extra shift. I shouldn't say anything that might rock the boat. But this type of thinking can take us in the wrong direction. And it's especially troublesome when it comes to the pressure that so many of us feel to be leaders. And that's what I want to talk to you about next, the hidden pressures that we're all subject to in our culture to be in charge of something. Starting point is 00:01:12 The federal Liberal Party has chosen Mark Carney as its new leader and the next Prime Minister of Canada. He won a landslide victory tonight among party members, even though he's never been elected in the House of Commons and as Tom Perry reports from Ottawa, Carney is vowing to fight for Canada in the trade war with the United States. The next prime minister of Canada, Mark Carney. In the end there was no upset. Mark Carney, the former governor of the Bank of Canada and Bank of England,
Starting point is 00:01:42 crushed his three opponents to claim the liberal leadership. Who's ready to stand up for Canada with me? Carney took more than 130,000 votes, more than 10 times the number received by second place finisher, Christia Freeland. In his acceptance speech, Carney vowed that as leader and prime minister, he will continue the fight against US President Donald Trump and his minister. He will continue the fight against U.S. President Donald Trump and his tariffs. They should make no mistake, in trade as in hockey, Canada will win. Carney says he'll keep reciprocal tariffs in place until the U.S. shows Canada respect, and vowed yet again this country will never become America's 51st state.
Starting point is 00:02:22 Tom Perry, CBC News, Ottawa. Former Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland came in a distant second place with 8% of the vote and quickly threw her support behind the new liberal leader. Mark has a very clear mandate, very clear support. Our party now is in an excellent position to fight and win in the next general election. We must and we will beat Pierre Poliev. Former government House leader Karina Gould was third with 3.2%. I'm super happy with the campaign that I ran.
Starting point is 00:02:58 I'm very proud of the team that we built and the momentum that we built across the country. We chose our next leader tonight and we are united liberals and that's something that is really important and now it's our job to stick together and to take this fight to Pierpolio. And former Montreal MP Frank Baylis came in fourth with three percent. Carney will become prime minister after being sworn in by the governor general. Last week Trudeau said he expects the transition will happen in the coming days or week. Even before the votes were counted, Conservative leader Pierre Paulyev went on the attack against Carney. Donald Trump will have a big smile on his face as he exploits all of Carney's
Starting point is 00:03:39 many conflicts to attack Canadian workers and Canadian jobs, but we conservatives won't let either of them do it. We will put Canada first. Poliev was speaking at a rally in London, Ontario and on the platform X tonight he says liberals are trying to trick Canadians into electing them for a fourth term by replacing Trudeau with his economic advisor Mark Carney. And finally, breaking sports news from the world of curling, Alberta's Brad Jacobs is the winner of this year's Canadian Men's Curling Championship. The Montana's Briar was held in Kelowna, BC. The CBC's Devin Haru is there.
Starting point is 00:04:22 is there. Fred Jacobs is a Briar champion once again 12 years after he won his first title in 2013. It was a bit of a slow start in the Briar final. Team Jacobs taking on Manitoba's Matt Dunstone. The first four ends blank. So in the fifth end
Starting point is 00:04:42 Matt Dunstone scoring two. That got things started back and forth. They went until the final end. It was Jacobs trailing three to two with the hammer. He made a takeout to score three to secure victory in the final end. So team Jacobs is now team Canada for the men's world curling championship
Starting point is 00:05:02 set to take place in Moosejaw, Saskatchewan. Later this month for Jacobs, it's a sweet victory. He says he can't wait to wear the maple leaf once again. The last time he did it, he won gold for Canada at the 2014 Olympics. For CBC Sports in Kelowna, I'm Devin Heroux. And that is your World This Hour. For CBC News, I'm Neal Herland.
