Just hours after he was sworn in as Canada's 24th Prime Minister,
Mark Carney acts the tax. During his first Cabinet meeting,
he signed an order in Council getting rid of the unpopular consumer carbon tax.
Tom Perry has more.
We've already taken a big decision as this cabinet...
Mark Carney's first act as Prime Minister undoing one of the marquee policies of his predecessor,
Justin Trudeau. Carney signing an order in council, eliminating the consumer fuel charge
known to most Canadians as the carbon tax.
It's my honour on behalf of my colleagues to sign this order.
Final rebate checks will go out in April.
Conservative leader Pierre Polly-Eve, who has campaigned on a slogan of Axe the Tax,
says Carney's move is a ruse to fool voters in the next election.
And after that election, if God forbid he were re-elected, there would be a bigger carbon
tax than ever
before. Because Carney would no longer need your vote, but he'd still need your money.
Carney has not yet said when that election will come. Tom Perry, CBC News, Ottawa.
The announcement came just hours after Carney and his somewhat smaller cabinet were sworn
in at Rideau Hall. David Thirt reports on who's in it.
We have new ministers with new ideas ready to respond to new threats and to
seize new opportunities. Just days after becoming liberal leader, Mark Carney
isn't wasting time. The new prime minister filling his cabinet with new
and familiar faces.
Good day for Canada.
Francois-Philippe Champagne is Finance Minister.
Other key ministers in the tariff war,
Melanie Jolie, Jonathan Wilkinson and David McGinty,
keep their old jobs.
While Dominique LeBlanc now focuses on the relationship
with the U.S. and provincial premiers.
To execute the powers and trusts as Minister of International Trade
and Intergovernmental Affairs.
24 ministers instead of 35 plus.
Among them some rookies.
Ontario MP Ariel Kayabaga as House Leader
and Nova Scotia MP Cody Blois in Agriculture.
The team, Carney says, that will grow the economy and defend Canada in the trade war.
David Thurton, CBC News, Ottawa.
Canada's sovereignty wasn't on the official agenda at the meeting of G7 foreign ministers in Quebec,
but as Kate McKenna reports, it was still a topic of discussion.
The president has made his argument as to why he thinks Canada would be better off joining the United States for economic purposes.
During his visit to Canada, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio downplayed Donald Trump's annexation threat as a disagreement between governments.
There's a disagreement between the president's position and the position of the Canadian
government.
Prime Minister Mark Carney said that's underselling Canada's stance.
It's crazy.
His point is crazy.
That's it.
A meeting of G7 foreign ministers has wrapped in Charlevoix, Quebec.
Though Canadian sovereignty wasn't on the agenda, other ministers, including Germany's Annalena Baerbach,
offered solidarity.
Canada's unity inspires us.
Despite Rubio's comments,
Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Jolie says
it was a good meeting,
with ministers unanimously agreeing to support
the US-brokered ceasefire proposal in Ukraine.
Kate McKenna, CBC News, L'Amel Bay, Quebec.
Hudson's Bay says it will begin liquidating its entire business as soon as next week,
unless it finds a more viable path forward. The department store chain has 80 stores and
says it has now been forced toward a full liquidation because exhaustive efforts haven't
turned up the financing the company needs to restructure. Hudson's Bay is Canada's
oldest company.
SpaceX has sent four crew members to the International Space Station
to rescue stranded astronauts Butch Wilmore and Sonny Williams.
The Crew Dragon spacecraft was launched shortly after 7 p.m.
Eastern time from NASA's Kennedy
Space Center in Florida.
The capsule is expected to arrive late this evening.
Both astronauts have been stranded in space for over 280 days.
