From CBC News, the world this hour. I'm Khalil Hassan Ali. Canada is part of the so-called Coalition of the Willing, Western countries helping Ukraine militarily and financially.
Starting point is 00:00:45 And as Chris Reyes tells us, it's to fill a gap left by the US, which has signaled it may no longer provide security guarantees to Kiev. This morning I convened the largest, strongest group of countries yet behind a just and lasting peace in Ukraine. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer spoke shortly after gathering dozens of world leaders, including Prime Minister Mark Carney, for a virtual summit to bolster support for Ukraine amidst a US proposed ceasefire deal. Also in attendance, European partners Australia, New Zealand and Ukrainian President Vladimir
Starting point is 00:01:19 Zelensky. The UK convened summit comes amidst tensions between the US and Ukraine, following a disastrous meeting at the White House more than two weeks ago between the two leaders. Earlier this week, tensions cooled when Ukraine accepted the US's 30-day ceasefire proposal. On Friday, Trump said he's confident that Russia will make a deal with the US. Enough people have died. So we'll see what happens with regard to all of it. But I'm getting some pretty good vibes coming out of Russia.
Starting point is 00:01:51 Starmer said the ball is in Putin's court. Chris Reyes, CBC News, New York. U.S. President Donald Trump has invoked an 18th century law to speed up mass deportations. The Alien Enemies Act of 1798 is designed to quickly remove foreigners during wartime or invasion. Trump says he's using it to go after a Venezuelan gang he accuses of carrying out an invasion acting on behalf of that country's government. A SpaceX crew has arrived at the International Space Station.

The four astronauts on board will be taking over for two others who have been there much longer than anticipated. Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams were only supposed to be gone a week when they took flight last June. However, their capsule encountered many problems. If all goes well, the pair will be headed back to Earth midweek. At least 32 people are dead following tornadoes and storms in the US South and Midwest, which
Starting point is 00:02:55 began on Friday. Brad Chermaine lives in Tyler Town, Mississippi. His friends, who are staying in a camper, are lucky to be alive. We all left. We came to seek shelter and they unloaded their groceries and their camp flipped with them in it. They were trapped. I don't know how long it took to get them out.
Starting point is 00:03:11 By the time we got there, they had already had them out in the ambulance. So I think she had a broken foot. Maybe he had some broken ribs. Homes and businesses have been destroyed. The severe weather is expected to continue into this morning. Alberta is the latest province to be with a measles outbreak, first in a first nation northern in the province and now in Calgary. Sam Sensen has more on the spread and how it plays into other cases across Canada. Dr. Craig Jenney researches infectious diseases at the University of Calgary.
Starting point is 00:03:45 With the ease of travel and the fact that Calgary is a large transport hub, you know, it really was a matter of time. Alberta Health Services announced late Friday night there's a confirmed measles case in the Calgary area with potential exposures in Airdrie, a bedroom community of the prairie's largest city. But Alberta's first cases were up north in Little Red River Cree Nation. Six people are recovering now with another potential case. Saskatchewan has one confirmed case. Manitoba has had six since February. Five of those cases are related to an outbreak in Ontario, the
Starting point is 00:04:18 province with by far the most measles cases in Canada. Measles is really one plane right away. Dr. Jared Bullard is professor and section head of pediatric infectious disease at the University of Manitoba. He says measles isn't an endemic in Canada right now.
