From CBC News, the world this hour, I'm Julianne Hazelwood. It's been a jam-packed day for Mark Carney.
Just hours before beginning his first foreign trip as Prime Minister,
he met with Quebec Premier François Legault,
walked Montreal's St. Patrick's Day parade,
and talked to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen about trade.
While Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called with his congratulations
and to thank Canada for its ongoing assistance.
All this on Carney's 60th birthday.
Catherine Cullen has more on the trip.
As the United States has gone from ally to attacker in a trade war,
Prime Minister Mark Carney is off to see some of Canada's old friends.
He'll meet French President Emmanuel Macron and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
The plan is to talk trade and the potential for the growth of AI,
as well as transatlantic security.
Helping support Ukraine in the face of Russia's full-scale invasion
has been high on the agenda for all three countries.
The Prime Minister's office also says Carney will meet with King Charles,
and on his return,
Carney will stop in Iqaluit to emphasize Canada's Arctic sovereignty.
A trip aimed at sending the message that Canada is sovereign in the face of attacks from Donald
Trump.
Catherine Cullen, CBC News, Ottawa.
Canada's ambassador to the U.S. says the government's strategy in navigating the trade war with Washington
should aim to be less reactive to every comment made by the Trump administration.
I just think we need to kind of not always take every single interview completely to
heart and it doesn't mean that it's not, it's appropriate.
But on the other hand, we are, we are having to move from here to a place where we can
solve these problems with the Americans.
Kirsten Hillman was at a meeting this past week with U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Letnick
and Ontario Premier Doug Ford.
She echoes Ford's sentiment that it was a constructive meeting and says the conversation
gave them an opportunity to push back on how the U.S. trade agenda doesn't recognize the
importance of Canada-U.S. integration.
In North Macedonia, a fire in a jam-packed illegal nightclub killed at least
59 people and injured more than 150 others. It was set off by flares, which ignited the ceiling.
Investigators have arrested at least 20 people, including government officials and the manager
of the club. Severe weather has created a path of destruction across the central and southern U.S.
At least 36 people were killed across six states after high wind gusts hailed and a string of tornadoes.
Phil Bleszanak reports.
And he says get to my house now because there's two of them headed your way.
Outside what's left of his home in Calera, Alabama, Tim Streakland says he escaped to a friend's house just before the tornado struck. And so we loaded up and we left leaving the cats
and dogs. We just got out of here. As soon as we got up there, it was hit. More than half a dozen
states in the U.S. southeast and midwest were hit with destructive winds that spawned powerful
tornadoes. In Butler County, Missouri, Tiffany Bowles says her gas station took a direct hit.
I mean this is all a big loss. We've lost all of our pumps. They were pulled out of the ground.
More than 50 tornadoes were reported nationwide according to the U.S. National Weather Service.
Hundreds of thousands are without power.
Extreme weather warnings remain in place for Florida up through Pennsylvania Sunday as the massive storm moves eastward and out
into the Atlantic Ocean. Philopoulos Shannok, CBC News, Toronto.
U.S. President Donald Trump is expected to speak this week with Russian counterpart
Vladimir Putin. Trump's trying to broker a deal to end the war in Ukraine.
I think it's going reasonably well. It's a bloody, terrible war.
And I do think it's going well.
As you know, we have a ceasefire agreement
with the Ukrainian group,
and we are trying to get that with Russia, too.
And I think, thus far, it's gone okay.
We'll know a little bit more on Monday,
and that'll be hopefully good.
Trump and Putin first talked last month.
U.S. special envoy Steve Wittkopf says he expects to see a deal soon.
