Pierre Poliev is now pledging to eliminate
Starting point is 00:00:42 industrial carbon pricing if his conservatives win the next election. He says his government will leave it to the provinces to decide how they want to handle large industrial emitters. David Thurton has more from Ottawa. Today I am announcing that a common sense, Canada first, conservative government will repeal the entire carbon tax, including the federal backstop that requires provinces impose industrial taxes. Conservative leader Pierre Polyev announcing he will go further than the Liberals. On Friday, Prime Minister Mark Carney signed a directive eliminating the consumer federal carbon tax, but industrial carbon pricing still applies.
Starting point is 00:01:18 The measure alone is expected to do most of the work to slash Canada's greenhouse gas pollution, but Polyev says if he government, he would eliminate that measure as well. While the Liberals tax businesses who use energy, conservatives will cut taxes and boost incentives for those who bring down emissions. Carrot, not stick. Poliev said he would reward businesses that switch to clean technologies through tax credits. David Thurton, CBC News, Ottawa. Prime Minister Mark Carney is at Buckingham Palace for an audience with King Charles. Later, Carney meets with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
Starting point is 00:01:55 The leaders plan to talk about two wars, the one in Ukraine and the one with the US over trade. Earlier in Paris, Carney discussed trade partnerships with French President Emmanuel Macron. With you, Mr. President, I want to ensure that France and the whole of Europe works enthusiastically with Canada, the most European of non-European countries, determined like you to maintain the most positive possible relations with the United States. Before returning to Ottawa tomorrow, Carney will be flying to Iqaluit. His office says that visit is aimed at reaffirming Canada's Arctic security and sovereignty. A liquidation at all Hudson's Bay stores could start
Starting point is 00:02:39 as soon as tomorrow and last for up to 12 weeks. The company told a Toronto court today it chose this path because it failed to secure the financing needed to stay afloat. The liquidation would affect 80 Bay stores across the country and several Saks Fifth Avenue locations. HBC has already paused its loyalty program. It has more than 8 million Canadian members with nearly 60 million dollars in unused points. President Trump says he will be speaking tomorrow with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Russia's war on Ukraine will be the topic.
Starting point is 00:03:14 The Americans have proposed the terms on a 30-day ceasefire, which Kiev has accepted but the Kremlin has not. Breyer Stewart has more. We'll be talking about land, we'll be talking about power plants, dividing up certain assets. Last week Putin said he agreed to the idea of a ceasefire but then spoke at length outlining what he saw as obstacles, like would the 30-day truce give Ukraine a chance to mobilize more troops and secure additional weapons? Those conditions that they have presented, it shows that they don't really want peace, actually, because...
Starting point is 00:03:50 EU foreign policy chief, Kaya Kallas, says that's clear because Putin's conditions include his ultimate goals for his invasion of Ukraine. European countries, along with the UK, are meeting to discuss what happens if there is a ceasefire and who will monitor it. Will France and Britain have committed to putting peacekeepers on the ground in Ukraine? Russia has repeatedly said that it will not support that. Briar Stewart, CBC News, London. An Ontario court has found a 2023 stabbing at the University of Waterloo was not terrorism but the judge ruled it did constitute a particularly grave hate crime. Twenty-five-year-old Giovanni Villalba Alamun attacked people in a gender studies class,
Starting point is 00:04:33 stabbing a professor and two students. The former student later pleaded guilty to two counts of aggravated assault and other charges.
