Starting point is 00:00:36 I'm Tom Harrington. Manitoba RCMP say a second set of remains found in the Winnipeg area landfill have now been identified as Mercedes-Miron. Previous remains found at the Prairie Green landfill were identified earlier this month as Morgan Harris. Both women were murdered by a convicted serial killer in 2022. 9 October Premier Bob Canoe responded to the news. Mercedes Myron and Morgan Harris are coming home. This is what we set out to do. I don't know if many of us knew the odds of success.
Starting point is 00:01:07 I certainly was always trying to keep a realistic perspective, but it turns out bringing them home was within our grasp and something we were able to do for these families. Canoe's government authorized the search in December. He says remains continue to be found, and the search might continue for a few more weeks. Prime Minister Mark Carney says he did not coordinate retaliatory tariffs with the UK and the EU. Speaking in London he says other countries will take their own decisions. Carney did talk about how his government will use the proceeds from counter tariffs on US goods. We will use all of the revenues from those tariffs to support Canadian workers that are affected by the U.S. trade actions.
Starting point is 00:01:46 Pierre Pauliev's commitment, as his commitment is anytime anything changes, is he's going to use it to cut taxes. So if you aren't paying any taxes because you don't have a job, you're out of luck. We're going to go help those who are affected by it, as we should. Carney's on his first foreign tour, stopping in Paris and London. He met today with Emmanuel Macron, Keir Starmer and King Charles. Carney says Canada's sovereignty didn't come up during his discussions and that Canada doesn't need another country
Starting point is 00:02:13 to validate its sovereignty. The City of Toronto has unveiled its answer to Donald Trump's tariffs. American firms won more than $200 million worth of contracts with the city over the last two years. Mayor Olivia Chow says that is about to change. Only Canadian companies can bid on construction work that is worth under $8.8 million and goods and service under $353,000. US-based suppliers will no longer be able to bid on city contracts. The Ontario provincial government has also banned American companies from bidding on
Starting point is 00:02:55 public contracts. Chow also says businesses most affected by US tariffs will be eligible for a property tax deferral. Conservative leader Pierre Pauliev is vowing to get rid of all carbon pricing if he forms the next government. Prime Minister Carney signed a directive Friday ending the consumer carbon tax. Poliev says that's not enough. This law is still in place, even though Mr. Carney has signed a fake executive order to
Starting point is 00:03:21 hide the tax for 35 or 40 days leading up to the election. The full carbon tax also applies to industries. Mr. Carney has said that he wants to expand the industrial carbon tax beyond the already eye-watering increases the government has passed into law. Poliev spoke at a steel factory in eastern Ontario that's been hit by layoffs caused by Donald Trump's tariffs. A former University of Waterloo student has been sentenced to 11 years in prison. The 25-year-old had earlier pleaded guilty to committing a knife attack in a gender studies
Starting point is 00:03:54 class. Karis Mapp has the details from Kitchener. Giovanni Villalba Alamun appeared in a Kitchener courthouse for the sentencing. Two students, in Catherine Falfer, an associate professor, were stabbed in a University of Waterloo classroom on June 28, 2023. Villalba Alamun was sentenced to 11 years for aggravated assault on Katie Fulfer, the teacher of the gender studies class, six years for aggravated assault on one of the students, 18 months for assault causing bodily harm on one of the students, and six months for assault with a weapon on one of the students. The sentences are concurrent. With time served,
Starting point is 00:04:28 Villalba Alamun has just over seven years left to serve. Villalba Alamun also faced terrorism charges, but Justice Francis Brennan ruled his actions were not ideologically motivated. The justice called his actions a particularly grave hate crime. Kara Smapp, CBC News, Kitchener. And that is your World This Hour for CBC News. I'm Tom Harrington. Thanks for listening.
