Starting point is 00:01:17 U.S. President Donald Trump is once again weighing in on Canadian politics. But it's a different message this time and one that's caught the attention of Conservative leader Pierre Polyev. Janice McGregor reports. After falsely accusing Justin Trudeau of clinging to power, Donald Trump now seems to be acknowledging that Canadians have a new prime minister and will soon head to the polls to decide whether or not the Liberals should get a fresh mandate to govern. In an interview with Fox News last night, Trump offered this take on the choice that Canadian voters have in front of them. The conservative that's running is stupidly no friend of mine.
Starting point is 00:01:51 I don't know him, but he said negative things. So I think it's easier to deal actually with a liberal. Pierre Polly-Eve noticed Trump's criticism weighed in on his social media account overnight, calling this an endorsement of Mark Carney and suggested that Trump knows that the conservative leader would be a tough negotiator. Poliev's adopted the Canada First slogan to try to pivot to a more nationalist stance. It's one that's reminiscent in its style of the populist politics that carried the day in the US last November while also trying to fight against it in substance.
Starting point is 00:02:25 Janice McGregor, CBS News, Ottawa. A group of chief executives from the energy sector is calling on the leaders of the four federal political parties to declare a Canadian energy crisis. And the executives want emergency powers to be used to help speed up the development of projects that they say are in the national interest. In an open letter, the CEOs of 10 of the largest oil and natural gas companies and the four largest pipeline companies outline their plan to strengthen what they say should be Canadian economic sovereignty.
Starting point is 00:02:56 Tesla has been removed from this week's Vancouver International Auto Show. The political position on this has absolutely no bearing on the decision. This is purely from a safety point for our guests and our attendees. As Eric Nichol, the show's executive director, he says although there are no active threats that he knows of, the action is being taken amid concerns about potential protests or vandalism. Tesla is facing growing global criticism as its founder, Elon Musk, continues to play an influential
Starting point is 00:03:25 role in the Trump administration. Now to the Middle East, where Gaza is once again being hit with Israeli airstrikes. The Israeli military says it targeted a Hamas military site overnight, with initial reports suggesting as many as 12 people have been killed. Crystal Gmancing has more now from Jerusalem. The second day of strikes comes as far-right Israeli politician Itamar Ben-Ghavir resumes his role as national security advisor. He resigned from that position in protest when Israel agreed to a ceasefire in January.
Starting point is 00:03:57 Now that ceasefire is broken. The resumed military operations and ensuing cabinet appointments, says Ansel Pfeffer of The Economist, is about maintaining power. Prime Minister Netanyahu needs to ensure that he has a majority over the next couple of weeks to pass a budget. If that doesn't happen, then early elections are triggered. Most of his potential coalition are on the far right, and they have been demanding an end to the ceasefire and a return to the fighting. Thousands of demonstrators are marching towards Jerusalem. Multiple groups are involved trying to show Netanyahu's government they'd rather fight for democracy. Crystal Gamansing, CBC News, Jerusalem.
Starting point is 00:04:41 Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky says Vladimir Putin has already broken his pledge to stop targeting Ukrainian energy facilities. Vladimir Zelensky is saying that less than 24 hours after the Russian president made his pledge, energy facilities were among the sites targeted in an overnight Russian drone attack. Zelensky says the attack included more than 150 Russian drones. Putin agreed to exclude the sites after speaking yesterday with US President Donald Trump. Zelensky says he'll have his own telephone conversation with Trump later today.
Starting point is 00:05:19 And that is The World This Hour. For CBC News, I'm Joe Cummings.
