Starting point is 00:00:36 I'm Tom Harrington. The White House says the U.S. will continue to share intelligence with Ukraine to help with its defense. Starting point is 00:01:30 It comes after two days of airstrikes that local health authorities say killed more than 400 people. Israel says its troops secured a crucial corridor that splits Gaza in two. Violent demonstrations are taking place in Istanbul after the city's mayor was detained by authorities. The popular politician is seen as the main rival of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in the upcoming election. Dominic Vilaytis reports. Iqrem Imamor's detention sparked violence on Istanbul's streets today. Police clashed with student protesters outraged at their mayor's arrest on charges of corruption and aiding a terrorist group.
Starting point is 00:02:09 Imamo is one of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's strongest rivals. The move against him caps a months-long legal crackdown on opposition figures across the country, and comes just days before he was to be selected as a presidential candidate. Imamo's Republican People's Party is rallying around him, describing his detention as a coup against Turkey's next president. European leaders meanwhile have slammed Imamo's detention, while Human Rights Watch says the charges levelled against him are politically motivated, an allegation the authorities deny.
Starting point is 00:02:48 Dominic Vilaitis for CBC News, Riga, Latvia. The president said that having a liberal prime minister would be easier for him to deal with. And you know what? It's true. Conservative leader Pierre Poliev using the words of Donald Trump to attack the liberals. Last night on Fox News the US president said Polyev was no friend of his, but added while it would be easier if the liberals won the election, it made no difference to him. Polyev says he'd be the tougher negotiator. It's clear that President Trump wants the liberals in power because they will keep this
Starting point is 00:03:22 country weak. What Canadians need is a leader who's tough, a leader who will make Canada strong, self-reliant, and stand on its own two feet. The latest opinion poll suggests the Liberals are now in a neck-and-neck race with the Conservatives. Starting point is 00:03:57 He says any new development must take the interests of his constituents into account. I think one of the things that's going to happen if they fast track anything, I can be clear and be sure that our people will protect these lands. It's not just in the courts but it's going to be on the lands. It needs to be done in a way where we are at the table, not on the menu. The region north of Thunder Bay contains vast deposits of nickel, copper, platinum, and cobalt. Last year, Canada added 744,000 people to its population.
Starting point is 00:04:34 The total now is 41 and a half million, an increase of 1.8%. Statistics Canada says it was the slowest growth rate since the fourth quarter of 2020, when border restrictions related to the pandemic were in place. And that is Your World This Hour.
