Canada's new prime minister won't confirm it just yet, but Mark Carney is expected to meet the governor general this weekend and trigger a federal election at a time when the conservatives lead in the polls seems to have evaporated.

Mark Carney, Canada's new Prime Minister, lacing up his skates and hitting the ice at an Edmonton Oilers practice, getting ready to hit the trail in a federal election. That began to change when Justin Trudeau stepped down as prime minister and when U.S. President Donald Trump began slapping tariffs on Canada and threatening its sovereignty. Grenier says right now it's the liberals on track for victory with the NDP fighting for political survival but polls can change or even be wrong. Very soon it will all come down to the campaign. Tom Perry, CBC News, Ottawa. One of the busiest airports in the world has been forced to shut down operations due to a power outage. Heathrow Airport has announced it will be closed all day today after losing its power due to a fire at a nearby electrical substation in West London last night. The fire also knocked out power to
Starting point is 00:02:39 thousands of homes in the area. Ellis Taylor is an aviation expert and says the impact to the airport and travelers will be significant. They're going to be tens of thousands of passengers affected. Our Syriam schedule data shows that there's over 660 flights scheduled to operate in and out of Heathrow today. So they are going to have to go somewhere else. We're already starting to see some flights from the U.S. particularly turning around, others diverting to places like Paris or Manchester or Gatwick. And really it's going to be quite the disruption.
Starting point is 00:03:14 Heathrow handles about 1,300 flights a day. Another execution has been carried out in the US. A man from Florida who was convicted of killing an eight-year-old girl and her grandmother over three decades ago was executed by lethal injection at a Florida state prison south of Jacksonville. 63-year-old Edward James pleaded guilty to the killing of Tony Nooner and her 58-year-old grandmother Betty Dick in September of 1993. Three other executions were carried out in the U.S. this week. Our colleagues at CBC Marketplace have helped expose scams for years, but now they're taking
Starting point is 00:03:51 the fight to the scammers by establishing a fraud-fighting center with several of the biggest names and scam-busting worldwide. In a room filled with screens and software used to infiltrate scammer networks, top scam buster Jim Browning has identified a threat. It looks like this scammer is able to see the victim's computer and they've logged
Starting point is 00:04:22 into their bank account. How much money is in that bank account? On one account alone there's nearly 250,000. CBC Marketplace brought together Jim and two other big name scam busters to take on fraudsters around the world. I've actually got CCTV of the scam happening. Browning has even hacked his way into the security cameras of a room full of scammers targeting North America from Pakistan.
Starting point is 00:04:46 The trio of fraud fighters have collectively stopped many millions of dollars flowing from victims to phone, text and online scams. It's hard to keep up, but it doesn't slow them down from trying and often succeeding. David Common, CBC News, Toronto.
