From CBC News, the world this hour, I'm Kate Rutherford. Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced a relief package for workers and companies hurt by the ongoing trade war.
In order to support Canadian workers, we will temporarily waive the one-week employment insurance waiting
period.
So in other words, if people are displaced because of the tariff situation, they immediately
can receive unemployment insurance.
As well as promising to make it easier to receive EI, Carney says the government will
allow companies to defer corporate income tax payments and set up new funding bodies
to help struggling businesses.
All of this ahead of expected new U.S. tariffs that were originally deferred
and now set to be announced by Donald Trump on April 2nd.
With an election expected to be called tomorrow, the federal government is expanding its dental care program. Starting in May, Canadians between the age of 18 and 64
can start applying for the Canadian Dental Care Plan.
Kamal Khera is the federal minister of health.
This cohort is the largest group
to enroll in our dental care plan.
In total, we're expecting an additional 4.5 million Canadians
to be eligible for dental coverage. That means, as I mentioned,
in total we are providing dental coverage to approximately 9 million Canadians who don't have
coverage right now. Kara says those who apply in May could receive coverage as early as June 1st.
In London,
in London. Flights are taking off and landing again at Heathrow Airport after a fire knocked out
power yesterday.
More than 1,300 flights were impacted as Europe's busiest hub was shut down for about 18 hours.
News of the airport's reopening is being greeted with cautious optimism by hopeful
passengers.
A technical issue there. Heathrow officials are warning travellers to expect significant delays throughout the day.
Protesters in Istanbul continue to clash with police over the tension of the city's
mayor.
The crowd has been throwing stones and flares as it pushes towards a heavy line of police.
Officers are repelling them with pepper spray during another violent night in Turkey's
largest city.
Thousands of people have been demonstrating.
The government accuses the mayor of Ekrem Imam Glu of corruption. His
supporters say it's politically motivated. Negotiations between the Italian government
and Elon Musk's satellite internet service, Starlink, are stalled. The government is trying
to guarantee encrypted communications between diplomats and defense officials working
in risky locations.
The deal between Rome and Starlink was expected to be worth more than $2.3 billion Canadian,
but opposition politicians are expressing concerns over handling a national security
contract to a foreign businessman and
ally of Donald Trump.
We're going back to Canada and our flight hadn't left yet from Canada.
Again a technical difficulty there. Boxer George Foreman has passed away.
It is over! It is over! It is over in the second round! George Foreman is the heavyweight
champion of the world! Foreman was a two-time world heavyweight champion, Olympic gold medalist,
entrepreneur, minister, and author. Among his most famous fights was beating a then undefeated Joe Frazier in 1973 and the famous rumble in the jungle in 1974 when
he lost to Muhammad Ali. George Foreman was 76 years of age.
And that is Your World This Hour. For CBC News, I'm Kate Rutherford.
