Starting point is 00:01:08 I'm Khalil Hassan Ali. Sources tell CBC News the next federal election will be held on April 28th. Prime Minister Mark Carney is expected to go to Rideau Hall tomorrow to ask the Governor General to dissolve parliament and call an election. This time, election integrity will be front and centre. US President Donald Trump says Conservative leader Pierre Pauliev was leading in the polls until he quote, got involved. Trump has said he'd rather deal with a liberal leader.
Starting point is 00:01:38 Prime Minister Mark Carney says he trusts Canadians to make the right choice. No foreign leader is going to determine who's best. One of the factors is going to be, in my judgment, who is going to be best for Canada in the negotiations with the Americans, which will come, but they're, from my perspective, they're not going to come until we get the respect we deserve as a sovereign nation. By the way, this is not a high bar. Carney has released details of a relief plan for those affected by the tariff war. He's promising to make it easier to get employment insurance and to allow companies to defer
Starting point is 00:02:10 corporate income tax payments. The federal government is also expanding the dental care plan. Kamal Khera is the new federal health minister. Starting in May, eligible adults between the ages of 18 and 64 can begin applying for coverage through the Canadian Dental Care Plan. And for those eligible, coverage under the plan could begin as early as June 1st. The plan is open to any Canadians with a household income under $90,000 and no private insurance. Applications will be available in three stages based on age.
Starting point is 00:02:46 Cummell says the average savings for eligible families is $870 a year. Nova Scotia is the latest province to take Teslas off the list of electrical vehicles eligible for $2,000 to $3,000 rebates. Manitoba made a similar move earlier this week, dropping Tesla and Chinese-made electric vehicles. B.C. Hydro is also banning new Tesla products from its EV rebate program. All three governments cited Elon Musk's association with Donald Trump and the trade war with Canada. It was another violent night in Turkey as thousands of people continue to demonstrate
Starting point is 00:03:23 in Istanbul and across the country. It comes after the arrest of Istanbul's popular mayor who the government accuses of corruption. As Dorian Jones explains his supporters say it's politically motivated. This morning there have been the mass arrests of protesters throughout the country in Turkey's main cities. Police have been carrying out dawn raids. This follows last night's demonstrations, which have been the largest so far since the arrest of the Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Ememoglu. In Istanbul, organizers claim over 300,000 people attended last night's demonstration. Across the city, Istanbul neighborhoods, similar smaller protests were being held, as in many of Turkey's main cities and towns

It does appear that the protests are building in momentum despite the strongest condemnation by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan last night who said the judiciary process has to be respected and condemn the protesters as street terrorists and ones that will not be tolerated. Starting point is 00:05:04 And Canadian Evan Dunphy set a new world record in the 35-kilometer race walk today. The 34-year-old finished in just over two hours and 21 minutes. Competing in Slovakia, the Richmond, BC native dropped seven seconds from the previous record. Dunphy is a three-time Olympian who won bronze in Tokyo in 2021. That's the World This Hour.
