From CBC News, the world this hour. I'm Riley Lechuk. Canada is on the verge of a federal election campaign. Prime Minister Mark Carney is expected to ask the governor general on Sunday to dissolve
Starting point is 00:00:48 parliament. Sources have confirmed to CBC News that election day will be on April 28th, that is five weeks from Monday, and the minimum period allowed under the law. This all comes as the trade war with the United States continues. Speaking in Montreal on Saturday, Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Jolie said she, her fellow ministers and the prime minister will do their jobs at the same time. We'll be there for April 2nd when President Trump is coming up with his new tariffs. And there's an important meeting at NATO on April 3rd and 4th.
Starting point is 00:01:24 And I'll be there notwithstanding that I'm also a candidate. Carney has said it is crucial that the government have a strong mandate from voters as it goes into battle. CBC Radio will have special coverage on Sunday when the election is called. Starting point is 00:01:53 app. Meantime, Prime Minister Mark Carney will run in the Ottawa riding of Nepean. In a post on the social media platform X, Carney says he is honored to be running in the community. The riding had been held by liberal MP Shandr Arya since 2015. The liberal party announced earlier this week that it had revoked Arya's nomination and had removed him as a candidate in the riding. To Ukraine. A Russian drone attack on Kiev caused damage in at least five districts of the Ukrainian
Starting point is 00:02:28 capital and several towns in its outskirts early Sunday. Emergency services said two people were killed in two separate locations in the city, including a woman who died after a drone hit an apartment building. Kiev's mayor says at least seven people were injured in the attack. Meantime, Russia's defense ministry says air defense units in Russia destroyed 59 Ukrainian drones overnight. The detained mayor of Istanbul is dismissing allegations against him as immoral and baseless as he appeared in a Turkish court. Ekrem Emimoglu was arrested four days ago by the Erdogan
Starting point is 00:03:06 regime on corruption and terrorism charges. The opposition leader's arrest has led to massive protests in many cities, which President Recep Tayyip Erdogan condemned. They attempted to provoke our nation over this corruption operation. They have been doing everything they can for four days to disturb the peace of the nation and polarize our people. They're trying every way to create an atmosphere of tension and chaos in our cities, especially in Istanbul.
Starting point is 00:03:39 The deputy chairman of Turkey's largest opposition party, the CHP, says it will stand by its decision to nominate Imamoglu as its candidate in the next presidential election. Uber drivers in British Columbia could soon become the first to unionize in Canada. Hundreds of drivers recently voted on joining the United Food and Commercial Workers Union, Local 1518. The results are now awaiting verification and approval by the Provincial Labor Relations Board. Patrick Johnson with UFCW says,
Starting point is 00:04:10 despite their diverse backgrounds, the drivers share a common desire for transparency and a voice at work. We know we have strong support, so we anticipate winning that vote. And so we'll immediately be working with the drivers to take in bargaining proposals. You know, ultimately we will bargain a collective agreement with Uber like we would with any other
Starting point is 00:04:30 employer and really, you know, hear from the drivers themselves on what's most important and bring that to the table. Uber acknowledges that BC has recently updated its laws to protect ride share workers. The company says it encouraged drivers to participate in the vote and have their say.
