From CBC News, the world this hour. I'm Claude Faye. Prime Minister Mark Carney is heading to Rideau Hall today. He's expected to ask Governor General Mary Simon
Starting point is 00:00:42 to dissolve parliament, launching the country into a five-week federal election campaign. As Olivia Stefanovic reports, it could be one of the most pivotal in decades. I trust Canadians. After just a week on the job, Prime Minister Mark Carney is turning to voters, asking for their trust to lead them in the fight against threats to Canada's economy and sovereignty. But the battle won't be easily won. We need a change.
Starting point is 00:01:09 Conservative leader Pierre Poliev says Canadians can't afford a fourth term of the Liberals. Led by Mark Carney, who working with Trudeau made Canada weaker and poorer. The Conservatives are pulling neck and neck with the Liberals, leaving New Democrats far behind. But if NDP leader Jagmeet Singh is concerned, he's not showing it. I want folks to know that I'm fighting for you. I'm fighting for you and I want to be your Prime Minister. Much could change over the course of the next five weeks. After all, campaigns do matter.
Starting point is 00:01:41 Canadians are expected to head to the polls on Monday, April 28th. Olivia Stavanovic, CBC News, Ottawa. And Prime Minister Mark Carney and Conservative leader Pierre Paulyev are set to run in ridings near each other in the upcoming federal election. Carney will run in the Ottawa riding of Nepean. It borders Paulyev's Ottawa area riding of Carlton. On X, Carney said he's honored to be running in the riding, calling the upcoming election quote, one of the most consequential in our lifetime. Protests across Turkey raged for a fourth night, the largest demonstrations in more than a decade. People are angry over the detention of Ekrem Imamolu, the political rival of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Police fire pepper spray into surging crowds of protesters in Istanbul. Hundreds have been arrested. The protests intensified after Imamoglu made a court appearance late
Starting point is 00:02:54 last night. Dorian Jones is in Istanbul. After a night of being questioned by prosecutors, the Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu has been formally charged by judges on the corruption charges. The judges have ruled that, as he is considered a flight risk and could tamper with evidence, he has now been sent to jail pending his trials. And given the fact that the Turkish legal system can move very slowly, he faces months, possibly years, in jail until this judicial process is concluded. Imamoglu's People's Republican Party, they are trying to keep them going on these protests. Today they are holding primaries across the country to elect him as their candidate for
Starting point is 00:03:36 the presidency. Imamoglu is seen by the opposition as really the only man who can defeat Erdogan in the polls. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, although insisting that the judicial process is independent, will be hoping that with his imprisonment, his political effectiveness will start to diminish and he will disappear from the political process. Dorian Jones for CBC News, Istanbul. Pope Francis has been discharged from hospital after five weeks of battling pneumonia. Francis greeted well-wishers outside from the balcony of the Rome hospital. The 88-year-old pontiff appeared weak but gave the crowd a thumbs up before being wheeled away.
Starting point is 00:04:18 A motorcade later took him to the Vatican for a two-month period of rest. Doctors say the pope is not completely healed, but they believe he will eventually be able to resume all of his normal activities. Parts of southern BC are expected to get pummeled with heavy rain today, with some areas set to get as much as 130 millimeters. Environment Canada has issued a rainfall warning
