I'm Joe Cummings. The federal election call has been made and the campaign is underway.
Starting point is 00:01:20 Who's ready to act some taxes? Who's ready to act some taxes? Who's ready to build some homes? At a rally last night in Toronto, that is Conservative leader Pierre Poliev. And this morning, Poliev is out with a major campaign promise. He says a Conservative government will cut income taxes by 15 percent for what he calls the average Canadian. Poliev says it will save seniors and working Canadians close to $2,000 a year. As for Liberal leader Mark Carney, he opened his campaign yesterday on the East Coast in St. John's, clearly underscoring that the election, from his party's point of view,
Starting point is 00:01:56 is about Canadian sovereignty. Tom Perry has more. Mark Carney. Day one of the campaign, liberals like fisheries minister Joanne Thompson are sounding confident. The party has seen a remarkable turnaround since Justin Trudeau stepped down and Donald Trump started talking about making Canada America's 51st state. Who is ready to stand up for Canada? In his first rally of the campaign,
Starting point is 00:02:25 Liberal leader Mark Carney spoke repeatedly about the threat to Canada coming from the U.S. They want our country. Never. They can't have it. Carney took aim as well at Conservative leader Pierre Pauliev, a man he calls the worst person at the worst time. But as Carney delivered his speech,
Starting point is 00:02:44 police were keeping a close eye on dozens of crab fishers the worst person at the worst time. But as Carney delivered his speech, police were keeping a close eye on dozens of crab fishers angry about cuts to snow crab quotas and want change. Carney acknowledged the protesters in his address and says he's ready to listen. Tom Perry, CBC News, St. John's. The other party leaders, the NDP's Jagmeet Singh, the Bloc's Yves-Francois Blanchette, and the Greens' Elizabeth May and Jonathan Pudneau all opened their campaigns yesterday in Quebec.
Starting point is 00:03:15 Away from the stump speeches and the rallies, the election battle will also be waged, as always, through targeted campaign ads, which according to a vet brand, range from celebrity endorsements to playing up the importance of family. always, through targeted campaign ads, which according to a vet brand, range from celebrity endorsements to playing up the importance of family. What are the two seasons in Toronto? Winter and construction. Wow, you really are Canadian. It only took this ad featuring liberal leader Mark Carney and comedian Mike Myers a day to reach 10 million views.
Starting point is 00:03:40 UBC political scientist Stuart Press says the liberal message is clear. It's all in invoking this idea that this is Team Canada. It didn't appeal to conservative voter Al Schliegel. It's important to me but it's not genuine. But it's a common theme. Pierre Pauliev's slogan is Canada first and his wife voices some of his ads. His children know him in French, Spanish and English as Papa. Prest says it's all part of Poliev building his image. So introducing himself and his family is a kind of a first family vibe, if you like,
Starting point is 00:04:12 to show that this is a family like any other. NDP leader Jagmeet Singh jumped into a TikTok trend in this video viewed by four million people. I retime my turban at least once a day. Evette Brand, CBC News, Vancouver. In other news, the United Nations is warning that the White House cuts to USAID could result in 2000 new HIV infections per day. The UN's aid agency is saying no other government or support organization has stepped forward to fill the gap left by the US cuts and the end result could meet an additional 6 million AIDS-related deaths before the end of the decade.
Starting point is 00:04:50 A comedian in India is being investigated for defamation after posting one of his stand-up routines on Instagram. That is Canal Camera taunting a close ally of the Indian Prime Minister. Party supporters of Eknath Shinde issued a complaint and that led to the police investigation. As well, the comedy club where Kamrak filmed his routine has been ransacked. And that is The World This Hour. For news anytime, go to our website cbcnews.ca. For CBC News, I'm Joe Cummings.
