On the campaign trail today,
Liberal leader Mark Carney is in Gander talking about Canadian
unity in the age of Donald Trump.
President Trump wants to break us so America can own us.
We will not let that happen.
And while Carney discusses Canadian sovereignty, Conservative leader Pierre Polyiv is in the
Greater Toronto area announcing his plan for a 15% income tax cut.
For seniors who are drawing their pension or retirement income, they will pay on average
15% less.
This is a tax cut for the workers behind me who will pay 15% less on their income tax.
This is a tax cut for the waitress, for the welder, for the barber.
The Liberals have announced an income tax cut as well.
Their cut will be smaller and it's aimed at making up for the loss of the carbon rebate.
As for Bloc leader Yves-Francois Blanchet, he is launching his campaign this hour in Quebec City.
And the Green Party's co-leaders are splitting their day today
between Vancouver Island and Montreal.
The details have now been released on the debates
scheduled for the federal election campaign.
The party leaders will be meeting twice.
The French language debate is set for Wednesday, April 16.
The English language debate goes the next day, April 17.
Both debates will be held in Montreal with broadcaster Steve Paken serving as moderator.
Away from the debates, the stump speeches and the rallies,
the election battle is also being waged as always through targeted campaign ads,
which according to Yvette Brand, range from celebrity endorsements to playing up the importance of family.
What are the two seasons in Toronto?
Winter and construction.
Wow, we really are Canadian.
It only took this ad featuring Liberal leader Mark Carney and comedian Mike Myers a day
to reach 10 million views.
UBC political scientist Stuart Press says the Liberal message is clear.
It's all invoking this idea that this is Team Canada.
It didn't appeal to Conservative voter Al Schliegel.
It's important to me but it's not genuine.
But it's a common theme.
Pierre Poliev's slogan is Canada first and his wife voices some of his ads.
His children know him in French, Spanish, and English as papa.
Prost says it's all part of Poliev building his image.
So introducing himself and his family is a kind of a first family vibe, if you like,
to show that this is a family like any other.
NDP leader Jagmeet Singh jumped into a TikTok trend in this video viewed by four million
people.
I retie my turban at least once a day.

The day after holding talks with Ukraine, US negotiators are speaking
today in Saudi Arabia with Russia. A ceasefire agreement for the war in
Ukraine is on the table, but exact terms and a timeline have yet to be agreed
upon. Briar Stewart has more. The negotiations come after a phone call last
week between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
I think you'll see a lot more progress get announced after Monday.
U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff insists the Russian leader is interested in peace, despite the
fact that Putin rejected a proposal for 30-day unconditional ceasefire.
Our job is to narrow the issues, bring the parties together, and stop the killing.
We do not trust Putin.
We do not trust Putin, we do not trust Russia.
Kira Rudik is a Ukrainian member of parliament
and says despite the talks between Trump and Putin,
Russia continues to hit energy sites and civilian infrastructure.
Even if Russia says they are ready to do the ceasefire,
how would you enforce it and what would happen if they break their part of the deal?
Last night, Ukraine said Russia launched nearly 100 drones at sites across the country.
The Air Force said it shot down just over half of them.

The popular genetic testing company 23andMe has filed for bankruptcy protection in the US.
The move comes two years after the company experienced a data breach and was sued for
failing to protect the privacy of nearly seven million customers.
That suit led to 23andMe paying out a $30 million settlement.
And that is The World This Hour.
