Starting point is 00:01:00 start listening today. From CBC News, the world is our. I'm Tom Harrington. It's the first full day of the federal election campaign and both the conservatives and liberals are promising income tax cuts. Conservative leader Pierre Poliev says he will find government efficiencies to fund them. He made the announcement in Brampton, Ontario. JP Tasker was there.
Starting point is 00:01:25 This is a tax cut that will put Canada first. The Conservative leader is pitching a new tax cut and a bid to win over voters. Pierre Poliev wants to slash the lowest tax bracket from 15% to 12.75. It would save nearly everybody who pays income tax some money. A worker earning $55,000 a year would keep an extra $900 if this goes ahead. This is a tax cut for everybody who has ever got up early in the morning and worked hard to build our country. It would cost the federal treasury some $14 billion a year. Poliab says he'll slash spending elsewhere to pay for it. We will cut back on foreign aid to bring our money home to this country.
Starting point is 00:02:06 Liberal leader Mark Carney has also announced what he's calling a middle-class tax cut, but it's smaller. JP Tasker, CBC News, Brampton, Ontario. The Liberal leader says he hasn't spoken with President Donald Trump, but thinks he's likely waiting for the outcome of Canada's federal election, then calling the winner. I'm available for a call, but, you know, we're going to talk on our terms as a sovereign country,
Starting point is 00:02:32 not as what he pretends we are, and on a comprehensive deal. Carney spoke during a campaign stop in Gander, Newfoundland, a symbolic location in Canada-U.S. relations. He's also promising a cut to the lowest tax bracket. At 1%, his proposal is lower than the one promised by the Conservatives. Carney says his cut is designed to offset the lost carbon tax rebate payments. The federal party leaders will hold two debates next month. The French language debate is set for Wednesday, April 16.
Starting point is 00:03:03 The English language version goes the next day. Both debates will be held in Montreal with broadcaster Steve Pakin serving as moderator for the English debate. Elections Canada says Canadians should be on the lookout for misinformation and disinformation about the voting process. The agency says it has been in touch with social media platforms to address its concerns. The chief electoral officer says she's reached out to X and TikTok to look for support in making this election secure.
Starting point is 00:03:33 Stefan Perot says he is satisfied with the response so far. To other news now. Egypt is floating a new proposal aimed at restoring the ceasefire in Gaza broken a week ago. But peace seems very distant for Gaza residents living under regular bombardment once again. Israeli strikes across the Gaza Strip overnight killed more than 60 Palestinians. Villa Marks reports. Um Samer al-Saifi cries out mourning her son Samir killed overnight in an airstrike

Others dig desperately through the rubble of damaged buildings, carrying out the bodies of the dead or searching for their belongings. Palestinian health officials say Israeli strikes across Gaza killed another 60 Palestinians, with more than 700 killed since attacks resumed last week, among them mostly women and children, as well as several senior Hamas security and political officials. Nursing director Mohamed Sacher says the targets included a ward on the Nasser hospital. The demonstrations broke out after Istanbul's popular mayor was arrested and later jailed on corruption charges, Mayor Ekrem Emamlu is seen as the main opponent of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in the upcoming election. Erdogan is calling the protests a movement of violence and says those responsible for property damage will be held accountable. And that is your World This Hour.
