On October 3, 1980, over 300 members of the Rue Copernic Synagogue in Paris gathered to
mark the start of Shabbat.
But what would begin as a regular Friday evening ended tragically after a bomb went off, killing
four people.
The resulting investigation would turn the life of an unassuming Canadian professor upside
down.
I'm Kathleen Goldthar, and this week on Crime Story, the
Copernic Affair. Find Crime Story wherever you get your podcasts.
From CBC News, the world this hour. I'm Tom Harrington. Radio Canada has confirmed Canada's
spy agency has evidence Indian government agents tried to influence the Conservative
leadership campaign in 2022. Pierre Paulev was elected leader in that race.
The Globe and Mail was the first to publish allegations Indian agents were
involved in fundraising and organizing in support of Polyev. It's not clear how
extensive those efforts were. The Liberals and New Democrats say Polyev
would be better informed if he agreed to a security clearance to receive CESA's briefings. Poliev says that's not happening.
What I will not do is commit to the oath of secrecy that the Liberals want to impose on
me. They don't want me to be able to speak about these matters. So they bring me into
a dark room and they'll say, we're going to give you a little bit of breadcrumbs of
Intel, and then we'll tell you you can't talk about any of this stuff anymore.
CESA says it has no evidence Pauliev or his campaign team were aware of the alleged interference.
Liberal leader Mark Carney is in Halifax pledging a Liberal government would rearm Canada's military
with more ships and submarines but for now Carney is offering few details. Tom Perry has that story.
Amid the towering frames of Navy and Coast Guard vessels being welded together at the Halifax shipyards,
Mark Carney promised a re-elected Liberal government would boost defence spending,
increase pay for military members, and purchase new submarines, icebreakers and drones.
We will deliver an unprecedented acceleration of investment in our armed forces.
Carney provided few details saying that would come in the Liberals costed platform that
is yet to be released.
Carney has ordered a review of Canada's purchase of American F-35 fighter jets in light of
Donald Trump's repeated
threats to Canada's sovereignty, but he would not commit to a further review of
US combat systems that will be installed in a new fleet of Canadian
destroyers set to be built in the coming years. Tom Perry, CBC News, Halifax.
CBC News has learned former Liberal cabinet minister Sean Fraser is running
again. The
MP for Central Nova announced he was retiring from politics back in December. But sources
tell CBC he has reconsidered at the request of Mark Carney. Fraser served as immigration
minister then housing minister in Justin Trudeau's cabinet.
To other news now, the RCMP say an avalanche killed three heliskiers yesterday in British Columbia. It happened just after midday near Kootenay
Lake. The statement says four people were swept away by the snow. Two from BC and
one from Idaho were later found dead. Another BC man was critically injured.
US top intelligence officials are being grilled on Capitol Hill about an
embarrassing security breach. A journalist was inadvertently included in a secret group on highly sensitive war plans.
It included discussions between the US vice president and the secretary of defense about
strikes on Yemen's Houthis. The director of national intelligence Tulsi Gabbard was in the chat,
but testified no classified material was shared, But she wouldn't admit it. Here
she is being confronted by Democratic Senator Mark Warner.
This was not only sloppy, not only violated all procedures, but if this information had
gotten out, American lives could have been lost. Director Cabert, you are not TG on this
group chat.
I'm not going to get into the specifics of the delivery.
So you refuse to acknowledge whether you are on this group chat. Senator, I'm not going to get into the specifics. So you refuse to acknowledge whether you are on this group chat?
Senator, I'm not going to get into this. Why are you going to get into the specifics?
Is this is it because it's all classified? Because this is currently under review.
Democrats on the Senate Intelligence Committee are calling for the release of the entire transcript.
The United States says it has made separate agreements with Ukraine and Russia to ensure safe navigation in the Black Sea.
The deal would allow Ukraine to safely export its grain to the rest of the world.
The White House says in return Washington would help restore Russia's access to international
agricultural and fertilizer markets.
The statement also says both Ukraine and Russia agreed to work towards banning strikes on
each other's infrastructure.
And that is Your World This Hour. For CBC News, I'm Tom Harrington. Thanks for listening.
