Starting point is 00:00:00 This is Michael Bublé, host of the Junos, Canada's biggest night in music. And trust me, this lineup is going to be everything. With performances by Akela, Baby No Money, Josh Ross, Nemesis, Snoddy Nose Rez Kids, a special final performance by Sum 41, and Michael Bublé. Now that's what I call a party. Don't miss the Junos, live March 30th at 8 Eastern on CBC and CBC Gem. And you're all invited. From CBC News, the world is ours.
Starting point is 00:00:36 I'm Tom Harrington. Donald Trump has announced 25 percent tariffs on all cars and light trucks not made in the U.S. They'll take effect on April 3rd, and the president says they'll be permanent. When the news broke, Prime Minister Mark Carney was meeting with the head of Unifor, the union representing autoworkers. He called these latest tariffs a direct attack on Canada. Canadians have gotten over the shock of the betrayal and are learning lessons. We have to look out for ourselves and we have to look out for each other. Last week we made a series of changes to the EI system.
Starting point is 00:01:07 It's also why we focused on today's announcement for the $2 billion strategic response fund. Carney says he will convene a meeting of the Canada-US committee tomorrow. They'll discuss retaliatory tariffs and other measures Canada can take to respond. We can see that President Trump's at it again. The Premier of Ontario, home to most of the country's auto plants, was quick to react to the Oval Office announcement. Doug Ford wants to fight back. I had an opportunity to speak to the Prime Minister.
Starting point is 00:01:38 I'm in full support of preparing retaliatory tariffs, tariff for tariff. I've asked the Prime Minister to convene an FMM call as soon as possible and discuss this with the other premiers to make sure we take a team Canada approach. But I can tell you we just aren't going to roll over. We're going to retaliate. Ford pointed out once again the tariffs will make vehicles more expensive for American buyers. Danielle Smith is fighting back against allegations she was disloyal. The Alberta premier told an American podcaster Trump should hold off on tariffs because they were helping the liberals. Critics say she was courting foreign interference. But Smith says she's defending Alberta's interests. Corey Segers has more. — I for one will never be silenced by the party in Ottawa.
Starting point is 00:02:24 — A defiant Danielle Smith attacked those attacking her for urging Republicans to postpone tariffs because they were helping the liberals. I'm fiercely criticized for going into the lion's den to change the hearts and minds of the very Americans that we need on Canada's side to avoid a trade war with the most powerful economy on earth. They want this lady and Alberta to just sit down and shut up. Smith slammed Mark Carney and the federal liberals for criticizing what she calls a diplomatic approach in the terrafore.
Starting point is 00:02:52 The Alberta NDP's deputy leader, Racky Pantrolie, responded. The premier and the UCP must broaden their focus from what's happening down south and stop neglecting the opportunities that exist right here in our own country. Smith continues her outreach to Republicans in Florida on Thursday, where she's a featured happening down south and stop neglecting the opportunities that exist right here in our own country. Smith continues her outreach to Republicans in Florida on Thursday, where she's a featured guest alongside popular conservative podcaster Ben Shapiro. Corey Segers, CBC News, Edmonton. The fourth victim of a Winnipeg serial killer has been identified as Ashley Shingoose of
Starting point is 00:03:20 St. Teresa Point First Nation. Until today, she was known as Buffalo Woman. Police believe her remains are in a Winnipeg area landfill. Manitoba Premier Wab Kanu made a promise to her family. We're going to work together with all levels of government, including Indigenous governments and the Winnipeg Police Service to search the Brady landfill and to do our best to bring your loved one Ashley Shingoose home. Jeremy Skibicki was convicted last year of first-degree murder in the slaying of four
Starting point is 00:03:52 First Nations women, including Shingoose. The remains of two others have been recently found in a different landfill. President Trump's national security team was in damage control mode today. New details have emerged about an embarrassing security breach. The Atlantic magazine has published a full transcript of the group chat on Signal, where one of its journalists was included by accident. It includes more details of high-level U.S. officials discussing military strikes on Yemen. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is one of those officials.
Starting point is 00:04:22 He insists no sensitive information was released. There's no units, no locations, no routes, no flight paths, no sources, no methods, no classified information. The breach is being called reckless by congressional Democrats, even American allies. The White House insists Signal is a secure app approved for official use. And that is your World This Hour. For CBC News, I'm Tom Harrington. Thanks for listening.
