Just hours after Donald Trump's 25% auto tariff kicked in, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced a 25% tariff of Canada's own. And it seems the premiers are on board. Marina von Stackelberg reports. Ottawa will match Donald Trump's auto tariffs. It will slap 25% levies on all vehicles imported from the U.S.
Starting point is 00:00:56 that don't comply with the current free trade agreement. Canada did manage to survive more tariffs yesterday that Trump levied on imports from many other countries. We got the best of a bad deal, which in my opinion is still totally unacceptable. Ontario Premier Doug Ford coming out of a virtual meeting with Carney and the rest of the country's premiers. It's really a Team Canada effort right now. All of the premiers are very supportive of the measured response. Even Alberta Premier Danielle Smith who has butted heads with Ottawa
Starting point is 00:01:29 over the best way to respond to the US President says she supports this latest response and revisiting the Canada-US Mexico free trade agreement that Trump negotiated during his last term. Marina von Stackelberg, CBC News, Ottawa. All the opposition leaders are pledging to support workers affected by the Trump tariffs. Conservative leader Pierre Poliev says he will scrap the GST on Canadian-made vehicles. And NDP leader Jagmeet Singh is pitching a program of victory bonds. Singh says the money could be used for urgent infrastructure issues and to keep Canadians employed. Ontario's premier says the province is already feeling the impact of Trump's auto tariffs.
Starting point is 00:02:10 Automaker Stellantis has announced it will temporarily pause production in Canada and Mexico. The Windsor assembly plant will be closed for two weeks. Stellantis will also temporarily lay off 900 workers at U.S. facilities. Doug Ford warns other American sectors will feel the pain as well. If they continue wanting to go after our lumber, that's just gonna drive the cost up of housing. If they go after, continue to go after the auto sector,
Starting point is 00:02:36 it's gonna drive the cost up of autos for Americans. And if they go after our pharmaceuticals, that's gonna drive the cost up. Ford's hoping that shutdown will be short lived. US financial markets were rocked by the trade turmoil today with stocks losing trillions of dollars in value and investors fearing it could all trigger a global recession. Katie Simpson reports. The opening bell on the New York Stock Exchange signaling the start of a brutal day on the markets.
Starting point is 00:03:05 Stocks dropping sharply at the open in response to President Donald Trump's tariff plan despite the pleas of White House Press Secretary Caroline Levin. To anyone on Wall Street this morning I would say trust in President Trump. By the time the trading day closed it marked the largest single-day loss since 2020. Trump has long warned there will be pain that comes along with all these tariffs. All of this sparking backlash on Capitol Hill. And there's worry among some everyday Americans. The reciprocal tariffs kick in at midnight on April 5th.
Starting point is 00:03:39 The White House is saying Trump is not going to back down before then, and that countries need to make dramatic changes to appease the U.S. in order to escape this trade war. Katie Simpson, CBC News, Washington. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen had a message for Trump during her visit to Greenland. You cannot annex another country, not even with an argument about international security." Fredrickson's visit follows months of Trump's threats to take over the semi-autonomous Danish territory. U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance also accused Denmark of doing a poor job of keeping the
Starting point is 00:04:17 Arctic islands safe. Fredrickson dismissed the accusations and says she's ready to work with Washington to strengthen security in the Arctic. Here at home, convoy protest leaders Tamara Leach and Chris Barber were found guilty on a few charges but acquitted on most. The protesters used trucks to shut down part of downtown Ottawa for three weeks in 2022. Leach and Barber were convicted of counseling others to commit mischief, but they were found not guilty on the four other charges, including obstructing police and intimidation.
