Starting point is 00:00:00 Scott Payne spent nearly two decades working undercover as a biker, a neo-Nazi, a drug dealer, and a killer. But his last big mission at the FBI was the wildest of all. I have never had to burn baubles. I have never had to burn an American flag. And I damn sure was never with a group of people that stole a goat, sacrificed it in a pagan ritual, and drank its blood. And I did all that in about three days with these guys. Listen to Agent Palehorse, the second season of White Hot Eight, available now.
Starting point is 00:00:37 From CBC News, the world this hour, I'm Claude Fague. After 30 years, The Great One finally has some company atop his NHL record shelf, courtesy the Great Eight. Alexander Ovechkin scored two goals Friday night, tying Wayne Gretzky for most goals scored in league history at 894, as the Capitals beat the Chicago Blackhawks 5-3 in D.C. The 39-year-old Ovechkin told Monumental Sports that this monumental achievement is one for his books. I'm sure everybody enjoyed this moment because it's something special.
Starting point is 00:01:14 Doing it at home in front of fans, family, friends, and obviously Wayne's here as well. It's a huge honor, it's a historical moment and you know yeah it's great. Ovechkin will shoot to score the new goals record Sunday when the Capitals face off with the Islanders in New York. It was another day of declines on trading floors around the world. Starting point is 00:01:51 These losses are staggering. More than six trillion dollars in value has been wiped out. The S&P fell more than nine percent in five days. The Nasdaq has fallen 20 percent from the peak. The chances of a recession are certainly rising. JP Morgan says there's like a 60% chance of a global recession. Chances of a US recession have risen to 30%. Because if these tariffs are implemented and actually begin to really bite, they'll hurt consumers, they'll shrink business margins,
Starting point is 00:02:18 they'll hurt the entire American economy. Canada lost 33,000 jobs last month. These losses came in before tariffs really started to bite. One economist said that it looks like the wheels may be starting to come off the Canadian labor market, so that just doesn't leave a lot of wiggle room ahead of the impact of the trade war that we know is going to have when it hits the Canadian economy. Peter Armstrong, CBC News, Toronto. A Russian missile strike has killed at least 18 people in eastern Ukraine.
Starting point is 00:02:47 Local officials say nine of them were children. It happened in the hometown of President Vladimir Zelensky. The president says Russian promises of a ceasefire end with missiles, drones, bombs or artillery. Zelensky calls it one of Moscow's deadliest attacks of the year. Ukraine says the attack targeted a residential area with a playground. Moscow claims the strike targeted a gathering of Ukrainian servicemen and foreign instructors. The future of CBC and Radio Canada is in the spotlight on the campaign trail. Liberal leader Mark Carney has pledged to boost funding and modernize the mandate,
Starting point is 00:03:31 while Conservative leader Pierre PaliƩv says he would scrap the CBC. Cameron McIntosh reports. Liberal leader Mark Carney vowing to modernize and strengthen CBC Radio Canada, promising more local news and supports for promoting Canadian culture, Carney is calling for $150 million in additional spending on CBC Radio Canada's $1.38 billion budget, as CBC pursues a new mandate. Our plan will safeguard a reliable Canadian public square
Starting point is 00:04:03 in a sea of misinformation and disinformation. For years, Conservative leader Pierre Polyev has insisted CBC has lost relevance, promising to defund it. My approach won't have an impact on Radio Canada. He said he'd keep French services but did not mention English CBC by name as he took aim at Carney for making another spending prompt. The Green Party and NDP have also expressed support for CBC Radio Canada. A CBC spokesperson said, during the election campaign period, we do not have any comment
Starting point is 00:04:32 on the party's positions. Cameron McIntosh, CBC News, Winnipeg. President Donald Trump is throwing another lifeline to TikTok. He's extending a deadline to keep the app running in the U.S. for an additional 75 days. That gives his administration more time to broker a deal with an American buyer. China's bite dance has insisted the app is not for sale. And that is Your World This Hour. For CBC News, I'm Claude Fague.
