Starting point is 00:00:00 When Eric and Lyle Menendez murdered their parents in 1989, most people assumed they did it for the money. But over the course of their trials, the Menendez brothers told a very different story. Now, after spending most of their lives behind bars, new developments in the case could lead to the brothers getting out. The NDP leader is expanding on his party's plans to help renters across the country. Jagmeet Singh promises to bring in a bill of rights for renters along with national rent controls. David Thurton has more. There's not much left over. People are talking about how much their rent is costing them, how it takes up sometimes
Starting point is 00:00:56 more than half of their income they're bringing in. And that is wrong. Jagmeet Singh in Halifax today talking about an issue that hits home for a lot of people, especially in a riding the Democrats are trying to flip. Singh promised to turn on federal funding taps to municipalities and provinces that protect renters through things such as rent control, as well as ending so-called rent evictions and demo evictions
Starting point is 00:01:19 and cracking down on landlords colluding to jack up rent, Singh says. We're not going to build affordable homes for those homes to just turn into unaffordable homes because there's no protections in place. Singh said the NDP would require provinces to enact laws that protect renters if they want to qualify for federal housing dollars. David Thurton, CBC News, Halifax. Conservative leader Pierre Polyev is campaigning in B.C. today, where he's under growing pressure to drop another candidate.
Starting point is 00:01:47 Aaron Gunn is the Conservative candidate in North Island, Powell River. He's being called out for social media posts made between 2019 and 2021, denying the impact residential schools had on students and Indigenous communities. AR what Aaron Gunn is doing is diminishing that, and that is absolutely wrong. And the fact that Pierre Pauliet is standing beside a candidate is also wrong. The Conservatives have dropped five candidates so far. Mark Carney and the Liberal campaign are on a travel day heading to BC. Tomorrow, he'll put his Prime Minister's hat on and meet with BC Premier David Eby
Starting point is 00:02:44 to discuss a Team Canada approach in support of BC's forestry industry. The US says it will apply tariffs of just over 34% on Canadian lumber exports. Israel's military has done an about face, saying its soldiers erred when they killed 15 paramedics in Gaza on March 23. Video of the incident contradicts the IDF version of events. Anna Cunningham has the latest. The Israeli military is now admitting its soldiers made mistakes because mobile phone
Starting point is 00:03:14 footage filmed by one of the paramedics killed has been released by the Palestinian Red Crescent Societies. It appears to now cast doubt on those original claims by the Israel Defence Forces. They say soldiers opened fire because the convoy approached suspiciously in darkness without headlights or flashing lights but this video appears to show vehicles slowing down, headlights on, emergency flashing lights in use and emergency workers wearing high visibility jackets. And without warning, shooting begins. And it goes on for about five minutes.
Starting point is 00:03:50 Now, Israel does say that six of the workers were linked to Hamas, but it hasn't provided evidence. It accepts though that they were all unarmed when soldiers opened fire, but it does deny executing the group at close range. Anna Cunningham, CBC News, London. Israel is refusing to allow two British MPs to enter the country, forcing them to fly back to Britain. Israel claims they were suspected of planning to document the activity of Israel's security forces and spread anti-Israel hatred. Britain's foreign minister called the MP's treatment unacceptable.
Starting point is 00:04:26 Pope Francis has made his first public appearance since being discharged from hospital two weeks ago. Happy Sunday to all. Thank you so much. The crowd in St. Peter's Square cheers and applauds as the pontiff greets them with a raspy voice. Francis spent five weeks in a Rome hospital battling a life-threatening bout of pneumonia.
