When Eric and Lyle Menendez murdered their parents in 1989, most people assumed they
did it for the money.
But over the course of their trials, the Menendez brothers told a very different story.
Now, after spending most of their lives behind bars, new developments in the case could lead
to the brothers getting out.
This week on Crime Story, I speak with Robert Rand, the journalist who's covered this story longer than anyone else.

From CBC News, the world this hour.
I'm Gina Louise Phillips.
We start on the campaign trail.
New Conservative government will fund recovery for 50,000 Canadians who need it.
Conservative leader Pierre Polyaev blamed the Liberal government's support for safe
injection sites and access to drugs for the increasing rates of overdoses and overdose
deaths.
He pledged to replace injection sites with rehab sites.
To fund this program, we will end federal funding for opioids, defund the drug dens, sue the opioid manufacturers
and consulting companies who created this crisis, and we will fund directly those people
who need the help, through groups that have success in delivering drug-free outcomes.
He also called for better surveillance at the border to stop opioids getting into Canada
and tougher sentences for drug traffickers.
The NDP leader expanded on his party's plans to help renters across the country.
Jagmeet Singh promised to bring in a bill of rights for renters along with national
rent controls.
David Thurton has more.
There's not much left over.
People are talking about how much their rent is costing them, how it takes up sometimes more than half of their income
that they're bringing in.
And that is wrong.
Juckmeet Singh in Halifax today talking about an issue
that hits home for a lot of people,
especially in a riding the Democrats are trying to flip.
Singh promised to turn on federal funding taps
to municipalities and provinces that protect renters
through things such as rent control, as well as ending so-called rent evictions and demo evictions and cracking down on landlords
colluding to jack up rent, Singh says.
We're not going to build affordable homes for those homes to just turn into unaffordable
homes because there's no protections in place.
Singh said the NDP would require provinces to enact laws that protect renters if they
want to qualify for federal housing dollars. David Thurton, CBC News, Halifax.
Mark Carney and the Liberal campaign are on a travel day heading to BC.
Tomorrow he'll put his Prime Minister's hat on and meet with BC Premier David
Eby to discuss a Team Canada approach in support of BC's forestry industry.
The US says it will apply tariffs of just over 34% on Canadian lumber exports. Israeli
officials are now saying the killing of 15 Gaza paramedics may have been a
mistake. A convoy of red crescent ambulances came under fire while
responding to an emergency and video filmed by one of the victims contradicts Israel's
initial version of these events.
Philip Lee Shanok has more.
Video recorded by one of the victims shows emergency lights flashing on vehicles clearly
marked as Palestinian Red Crescent ambulances.
The convoy comes under fire, workers wearing high-visibility jackets run for cover. Survivor Mumther Abed says the attack happened in the dark without warning.
While we were driving, suddenly there were gunshots on the car,
there was heavy gunfire directed at us, he says.
Fifteen men were killed, their bodies found in a mass grave, along with the phone.
Nabal Farsak is with the Palestine Red Crescent Society. We need to ensure that all of those who are responsible are held to account.
Israeli Defence Forces originally claimed the soldiers opened fire because a convoy was
traveling without flashing lights or headlights. Now it admits its initial account was mistaken
and says there will be a full investigation. Fil Tshanok, CBC News, Toronto.
In sports, Alex Avetskin has made NHL history.
Here is Avetskin!
He scores!
He scores!
Number 895!
The Washington Capitals captain broke Wayne Gretzky's record of 894 career goals. The Great One owned that mark for 31 years after taking it from Gordie Howe in 94.
The game was immediately paused for an on-ice ceremony marking the moment.
NHL commissioner Gary Bettman gave Ovechkin a painting of him hoisting the Stanley Cup.
And that is all for The World This Hour.
Thank you so much for listening.
