Starting point is 00:00:00 Scott Payne spent nearly two decades working undercover as a biker, a neo-Nazi, a drug dealer, and a killer. But his last big mission at the FBI was the wildest of all. I have never had to burn baubles. I have never had to burn an American flag. And I damn sure was never with a group of people that stole a goat, sacrificed it in a pagan ritual, and drank its blood. And I did all that in about three days with these guys. Listen to Agent Palehorse, the second season of White Hot Hate, available now.
Starting point is 00:00:37 From CBC News, it's the world this hour. I'm Joe Cummings. The overseas markets are plunging again today as the fallout continues from the Trump administration's tariff campaign. The European markets are all deep in the red and it's the same story in Asia where the trading day has ended with steep losses right across the board. Patrick Fock reports now from Singapore. This was the biggest single day round in 16 years for the region on mounting fears of a severe economic downturn.
Starting point is 00:01:09 Robert Brooks from Australia's Monash University warns global macroeconomic settings are going to worsen. Lower global growth and we're going to be in a world of higher inflation. Chinese stocks were the worst hit. Experts say Asian economies are seen as especially vulnerable to a tit-for-tat exchange of retaliatory tariffs between Washington and Beijing. There were steep losses among tech players. Taiwan's semiconductor manufacturing was down by around 10 percent. Alibaba, Tencent and Xiaomi were also deep in the red.
Starting point is 00:01:39 Meanwhile, a report by Bloomberg said policy makers in China are planning to unleash stimulus measures to boost consumption. State media also reported that the government has the tools to defend its economy. Investors are gripped by the uncertainty. President Trump has said he will not ease tariffs unless other countries pay the U.S. quote, a lot of money. Patrick Falk for CBC News, Singapore. Meanwhile, European Union trade ministers are meeting in Luxembourg today discussing their response to the Trump tariffs. Ireland's trade minister, Simon Harris, says the trading relationship between the EU and the United States is an important one and the EU wants to make a deal.
Starting point is 00:02:17 I suppose the outstanding question is, is the United States up for one? the United States up for one. And what we have to consider here today, what can we do strategically to help further, I suppose, increase our own leverage to get the United States around a negotiation table? Harris says although Ireland and the US have close diplomatic relationships, his country is firmly with the European Union. Prime Minister Mark Carney says he discussed the Trump tariffs yesterday with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Carney's office is saying the discussion centered on the need for the two countries to strengthen their economic ties to counter the, quote, unjustified U.S. trade action. Both leaders say they agree that the old relationship they both enjoyed with the United States is
Starting point is 00:02:58 now over. As for Carney's campaign schedule today, he is in Victoria. Conservative leader Pierre Poliev is in B.C. as well. He's in Terrace. NDP leader Jagmeet Singh is campaigning in Toronto. The Bloc's Eves Francois Blanchet is continuing with his efforts across Quebec. And Green Party co-leader Elizabeth May is in Guelph, Ontario. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is in Washington today for tariff and trade talks
Starting point is 00:03:23 with the Trump White House. But he can expect to face questions on the latest Israeli airstrikes on Gaza. Palestinian journalists are saying they were among those targeted. Crystal Gamansing has more now from London. At around 3 a.m., we woke up on an explosion next to us, says Abshat. The Palestinian journalist and his colleagues were sheltering in tents in Hanunis. They were hit by an Israeli airstrike overnight. Palestinian medics say a journalist was one of two people killed in the attack.
Starting point is 00:03:58 Nine other journalists, also sheltering near the Nasser Medical Complex, were injured. The strike comes as Israel faces scrutiny for changing its story about what happened in southern Gaza on March 23rd. A convoy of emergency vehicles came under fire. Video surfaced contradicting Israel's claims that the vehicles did not have lights or emergency signals on. 15 people were killed. Crystal Gamansing, CBC News, London.
Starting point is 00:04:28 About 55,000 Ontario homes and businesses are still without power this morning, 10 days after an ice storm swept across the region. Central Ontario was hardest hit with the Coorthill Lakes area in and around Peterborough, making up nearly half of the remaining outages. In total, over a million Ontario customers were affected, with the freezing rain and strong winds bringing down power lines and shorting out transfer stations.
Starting point is 00:04:54 And that is The World This Hour. For CBC News, I'm Joe Cummings.
