1942, Europe. Soldiers find a boy surviving alone in the woods. They make him a member
of Hitler's army. But what no one would know for decades, he was Jewish.
Could a story so unbelievable be true?
I'm Dan Goldberg. I'm from CBC's Personally, Toy Soldier. Available now wherever you get your podcasts.
From CBC News, it's the World This Hour. I'm Joe Cummings.
After days of steep losses, the North American stock markets are back in positive territory today.
In early trading, the numbers are up right across the board.
But the question is, can this rebound last?
Peter Armstrong has more.
It's a very different feeling and a very different result.
Optimism abounds, stocks are climbing.
Now, for all the technical jargon of 200 day moving averages and right
sizing forecast expectations, this is at its core a bet, a bet that a deal to avoid global
economic catastrophe will be made. The next round of tariffs is kicking at midnight tonight.
So that deal might not be in place by then, But investors seem to be saying they think one is in the works
that can stave off economic catastrophe. But we have no way of knowing what that deal might
be, what it might look like, what it might take to get it done, and how long this might
continue. So beware of what traders call a sucker's rally. We're in the midst of a sell
off. They find a reason to declare a bottom stock surge only to go back down again on the first scent of bad news once
again. Peter Armstrong, CBC News, Toronto. Now to the election campaign and
Conservative leader Pierre Poliev. He is starting his day in Edmonton promising
that a Conservative government will crack down on offshore tax havens. We will be
naming a bring it home economic and tax task force whose mandate will be to
ensure that we close overseas tax havens and force the very wealthy to pay what they owe.
This is a similar pledge that was rolled out last week by the New Democrats.
As for the NDP today, leader Jagmeet Singh is in Vancouver. Liberal leader Mark out last week by the New Democrats. As for the NDP
today, leader Jagmeet Singh is in Vancouver. Liberal leader Mark Carney is also in B.C.
He's in Delta. Bloc leader Yves-Francois Blachette is in Ottawa. And Green Party co-leader Elizabeth
May is in Guelph, Ontario. Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky says his troops have captured
two Chinese fighters serving with Russia in eastern Ukraine.
Here's Zelensky today speaking through an interpreter.
I understand that we are a strong country, but we cannot fight multiple countries at
the same time, all of whom want something on our land.
Zelensky calls it an important development that he needs to discuss with Ukraine's
allies, and he's also hoping it will prompt a further discussion about the war in Ukraine with the United States.
One of Russia's most infamous protest groups is touring Canada.
Pussy Riot is a political protest show based on the memoir of one of its founding members.
Alysheosan has more.
Pussy Riot says they are not a punk band.
This is not a punk show. Their Canadian tour is a protest.
They're like, I would say more than just a band. They're like a movement.
Concert goers outside this week's Toronto show say Pussy Riot is just as impactful now as they were 13 years ago.
Putin's This North American tour called Riot Days that's based on original member Maria Alquina's
book of the same name.
All of the proceeds go to the Ukraine war effort and advocacy for Russian political
prisoners.
Ali Shiasan, CBC News, Toronto.
Prince Harry was in a London court today looking for the reinstatement of his British security
detail.
The Duke of Sussex lost his security privileges five years ago after he stepped down from
his role as a working member of the royal family.
As part of his legal argument, Harry is claiming that due to intense media coverage, he and
his family are in danger whenever he visits his home country.
And that is The World This Hour.
