Asian stock markets fell in trading Wednesday after the latest U.S. tariffs kicked in. President Donald Trump bragged about the new tariffs at a Republican black tie dinner tonight
in Washington.
Right now, China is paying a 104% tariff.
Think of it, 104%.
But Trump reassured the crowd that his tariff strategy will pay off, insisting that China
will negotiate new trade conditions.
I think they'll make a deal at some point. China will. They want to make a deal. They really do.
They want to make a deal. They just don't know how to get it started. The new tariffs include a 46%
levy on imports to the U.S. from Vietnam, 25% on South Korean goods, and 20% on imports from
the European Union. Liberal leader Mark Carney held a rally in Calgary tonight and he took
aim at US President Donald Trump and conservative leader Pierre Poliev.
President Trump's plan is to divide and conquer. Pierre Poliev's plan is to
divide and be conquered. This is not the time, this is not the time for divisive angry
politics. Negativity is not going to win a trade war. On Tuesday Carney spoke about
his plan to speed up construction of affordable homes across Canada.
Meantime the NDP is fighting for every single vote right now. It's also
fighting for relevance in a campaign where global economic threats are drowning
out other issues.
As Ashley Burke explains, it's forcing the party and its leader to adjust.
Well, at the election where it's today, the NDP might see one of its worst outcomes in
its history.
Abacus data pollster David Coletto says the NDP is struggling to be relevant in a campaign dominated
by Donald Trump's trade war and affordability, including in BC.
Mr Singh himself is in jeopardy of losing his seat because the NDP has fallen so far
in British Columbia.
The conservatives are also targeting NDP held writings in the province where the NDP holds
half its seats.
Re-elect your New Democrat incumbents, elect new Democrats, send more new Democrats to
Ottawa because we're going to stand up and fight for you.
Singh's no longer saying he's running to become prime minister like he did on day one, asking
instead for there to be more NDP MPs.
And then what do you need to do?
Singh's former spokesperson, Melanie Richet, says Singh's message needed to change with
polling showing the liberals in the lead and potentially majority territory. Ashley Burke, CBC News, Burnaby, BC. Conservative leader
Pierre Poliev was in Edmonton Tuesday promising to lower taxes for Canadians
by cracking down on offshore tax havens. We will be naming a bring-it-home
economic and tax task force whose mandate will be to ensure that we close overseas tax
havens and force the very wealthy to pay what they owe.
Poliev also wants to create a name and shame publication to expose corporations evading
taxes.
He says his proposed measures can recover as much as $ billion dollars a year in lost revenue.
The head of NATO has a dire warning about the consequences if Ukraine loses the war
with Russia.
Mark Ruda gave a speech in Tokyo Wednesday and he says if Ukraine falls to Russia, it
would embolden China to invade Taiwan.
The world is watching the war and its outcome very closely.
China is certainly watching. It's Ukraine
today, it could be East Asia tomorrow. The NATO secretary general also says the previous
target that every NATO member should spend 2% of its GDP on defense is too low. Canada
has yet to achieve that 2% goal. Ontario schools have started to suspend thousands of unvaccinated students
to prevent the spread of measles. There are hundreds of cases in the province,
the majority in children. 173 students were suspended in Toronto on Tuesday,
1600 in Waterloo, Ontario last week.
Toronto Public Health says about 10,000 students aren't up to date on
their vaccination. And that is your World This Hour. For CBC News, I'm Neil Hurland.
