Starting point is 00:00:00 When they predict we'll fall, we rise to the challenge. When they say we're not a country, we stand on guard. This land taught us to be brave and caring, to protect our values, to leave no one behind. Canada is on the line and it's time to vote as though our country depends on it. Because like never before, it does. I'm Jonathan Pedneau, co-leader of the Green Party of Canada. This election, each vote makes a difference. Authorized by the Registeredleader of the Green Party of Canada. This election, each vote, makes a difference. Authorized by the Registered Agent of the Green Party of Canada.
Starting point is 00:00:33 From CBC News, the world this hour. I'm Neil Herland. China is taking new steps today in a trade war with the U.S. retaliating against Washington by responding with an 84 percent tariff on U.S. goods sold in China. It's part of Beijing's reaction to President Donald Trump's 125 percent tariff on Chinese goods. Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders is questioning Trump's tariff strategy, especially when it comes to Canada. How is it worth it when you have people that have been our neighbors and allies and friends for almost 200 years in Canada now distrusting the United States,
Starting point is 00:01:14 our friends in the UK throughout Europe distrusting the United States? We are becoming isolated from the rest of the world. Yesterday, Trump paused a plan to impose hefty tariffs on dozens of U.S. trading partners on the platform ex-Prime Minister Mark Carney called Trump's pause on tariffs a welcome reprieve for the global economy. But conservative leader Pierre Polyev questioned Carney's ability to deal with the American president. The Liberal and NDP campaigns both touched down in Saskatoon last night.
Starting point is 00:01:45 Their planes parked next to each other on the tarmac, and both parties threw events in the same riding they're hoping to win. In a province where both parties don't hold any seats, Ashley Burke has more. We are in the Paris of the Prairies, thank God. This is amazing. It's amazing to be back in Saskatoon. Liberal leader Mark Carney and NDP leader Jagmeet Singh. Oh, man, this is in some energy. We needed this energy.
Starting point is 00:02:12 Both rallying supporters in Saskatoon West within two kilometers of one another. We got to send great Saskatchewan MPs to Ottawa. The Liberals and NDP were both shut out of the province in the 2019 and 2021 elections. Now the parties are trying to change that and pick up conservative seats. Ottawa works best when one party doesn't have all the power. We've seen in our history the best things that have ever come out of our parliament have been when new Democrats have been there. Our universal healthcare, new Democrats.
Starting point is 00:02:45 Singh pitching the hope of a minority government by sending more NDP MPs to parliament as the liberals try to solidify their strong support and polls across the Prairie provinces. Ashley Burke, CBC News, Saskatoon. A sharp divide is emerging in the way federal parties are dealing with the media. Most parties have taken a traditional approach with media outlets, including the CBC, paying to have their reporters travel on board campaign planes and buses. The Conservative Party decided not to bring
Starting point is 00:03:16 reporters along this campaign, which has made it more challenging to cover Conservative leader Pierre Pauliev. But as Tom Parry reports, that's not the only hurdle reporters have had to face. We will not take questions from the floor. Pierre Polyev's campaign day usually starts with a speech unveiling some new policy, followed by a news conference. Polyev usually takes just four questions, with conservative party staffers deciding which reporters get to ask. Is that why you haven't got your security clearance? with conservative party staffers deciding which reporters get to ask.
Starting point is 00:03:45 Is that why you haven't got your security clearance? That boiled over this week in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, when a reporter not handpicked by the party tried to shout a question. Sorry, there's just a protester here. Go ahead. It's a reporter trying to ask you a legitimate question. The Liberals, New Democrats and Bloc Québécois all have reporters traveling on their campaigns. Those reporters decide who asks questions.
Starting point is 00:04:10 It's added up to the other party leaders facing far more questions at their events than Poliev, whose party vowed this would be one of the most accessible and transparent campaigns in recent memory. Tom Perry, CBC News, Ottawa. Officials from the United States and Russia are meeting in Turkey today to try to ease tensions and resume more diplomatic work in each other's countries. The war in Ukraine triggered a chill between the two sides, with each country making it difficult for the other to get credentials for their diplomats.
Starting point is 00:04:43 Today's talks will not be focused on the war in Ukraine. And that is your World This Hour. For CBC News, I'm Neil Herland.
