Starting point is 00:00:00 Scott Payne spent nearly two decades working undercover as a biker, a neo-Nazi, a drug dealer, and a killer. But his last big mission at the FBI was the wildest of all. I have never had to burn baubles. I have never had to burn an American flag. And I damn sure was never with a group of people that stole a goat, sacrificed it in a pagan ritual, and drank its blood. And I did all that in about three days with these guys. Listen to Agent Palehorse, the second season of White Hot Hate, available now. From CBC News, the world this hour, I'm Gina Louise Phillips. Advance polls are open for voters across the country this morning,
Starting point is 00:00:44 and Canadians can begin making their judgments on the outcome of the English debate performance. Federal leaders went face to face last night for the final time in this election campaign. As Olivia Stefanovic reports, Liberal leader Mark Carney was the one mostly caught in the crossfire. You are exactly in the same line as Justin Trudeau and the rest of the liberal team. Conservative leader Pierre Poliev repeatedly tried to paint Mark Carney in the same image of his predecessor. Look, I'm a very different person from Justin Trudeau. Focus is on results. Were you his economic adviser?
Starting point is 00:01:20 Carney pushed back. Justin Trudeau isn't here. Although the new liberal leader was the main target, Carney wasn't the only one who came under attack. Conservatives have a plan for change. And that plan includes cutting your... NDP leader Jagmeet Singh interrupted Poliev several times.
Starting point is 00:01:38 You want to save people $2,000, but cut their dental care, which is thousands of dollars. Bloch-Quebecois leader Yves-François Blanchette also engaged in some sharp exchanges with Carney over areas of provincial jurisdiction. "...forcing health care, spending our whole social space..." "...intrusion, intrusion, intrusion, intrusion in Quebec jurisdiction over and again." Olivier Stvanovic, CBC News, Montreal. One of the five topics in the debate was energy and climate with party
Starting point is 00:02:05 leaders arguing over their policies for a more sustainable future and as Susan Ormiston reports pipelines got marquee mention. Asked do Canadians care about the climate crisis in this election NDP leader Jagmeet Singh was clear. Absolutely you speak to any any young person and they think no we're seeing climate crisis in front of us, happening right now. Climate, which has been a sleeper in the campaign, did get its moment last night.
Starting point is 00:02:32 Liberal leader Mark Carney promising... This country can be a clean energy superpower. My government will help deliver. But Carney said carbon capture and storage, that is, trying to clean carbon emissions from oil and gas would be a large part of his plan. Conservative leader Pierre Poliev said his government would build out more pipelines and LNG infrastructure and accused Carney of planning to bring back the consumer carbon tax he killed.
Starting point is 00:03:00 Planning to raise it after the election. He's also going after a tax on our industry that will ultimately be passed on to you. Carney fired back. I'm going to address the broader point to the entire absence of a climate plan from Mr. Poglia. Susan Ormiston, CBC News, Toronto. Measles continues to spread in parts of Canada. The virus is one of the most contagious but also one of the most preventable diseases with vaccinations. And as Jennifer Yoon reports, one province appears to be curbing that trend.
Starting point is 00:03:29 We're facing essentially kind of a return to the late 1800s. Dr. Lenora Saxinger remembers being told during her training that she might not see another case of measles. With how widely measles are spreading though, now the University of Alberta infectious disease specialist thinks that's unlikely. Over a thousand Canadians have caught the virus so far this year. Saxinger fears the virus will kill someone before long. I think it's just a matter of time, honestly, which is a really terrible thing to have to think about. The number of measles cases are steadily on the rise across Alberta.
Starting point is 00:04:05 And with some communities with vaccination rates as low as 20% and below, Saxon fears it will spread quickly among those without immunity. That's what's happening in Ontario, which reported over 100 new cases this past week. Health authorities in other provinces in the meantime are imploring those who haven't gotten the jab to do so. Jennifer Yoon, CBC News, Toronto. Health authorities in other provinces in the meantime are imploring those who haven't gotten the jab to do so. Jennifer Yoon, CBC News, Toronto. At least 38 people have been killed and 102 wounded in US airstrikes on Yemen.
Starting point is 00:04:35 It's the deadliest known attack under US President Donald Trump against Houthi rebels. The American military's central command has confirmed the attack. There have been hundreds of strikes in this campaign since March 15th. And that is The World This Hour. You can listen to us anytime on voice-activated devices like Google Home.
