So Canada, we've got to choose a new prime minister and it's a pretty crucial time.
Even people who don't normally follow politics are trying to figure out what the heck is
going on.
I'm Catherine Cullen, host of The House, and I started a new weekly election show with
two friends and fellow political nerds.
Hello, I'm Daniel Thibault bringing you the Quebec Point de Vu.
I'm Jason Microsoft and Calvary bringing the takes and stakes from the West.
Together, we are House Party, a weekly elections podcast for everyone.
We tackle one big burning question every Wednesday.
Find us in the House's feed wherever you get your podcasts.
From CBC News, the world this hour, I'm Julianne Hazelwood.
Liberal leader Mark Carney unveiled his costed election platform today.
It proposed billions in new spending, but also promises a deficit that shrinks over the next four years.
Karina Roman reports.
The biggest expenditures in the Liberal platform are the previously announced income tax cut,
the scrapping of the capital gains tax changes, and build Canada homes plan for affordable housing.
There's 18 billion in new defence spending that the Liberals say would get Canada to
the 2% of GDP spending target before 2030.
Overall there's $130 billion over four years of new measures, with the deficit projected
downwards from nearly 62 billion this year $47 billion in 2029.
Liberal leader Mark Carney.
The numbers do add up very much.
That is how you meet the moment.
That is how you meet a crisis.
There are a slew of new promises in the costed platform,
including a comprehensive review of government programs,
estimated to save the government $28 billion.
The Liberals account for counter-tariff revenues only for this year, signaling their hope that
the trade war with the U.S. will get settled.

Another platform is being rolled out today.
NDP leader Jagmeet Singh announced his party's plans in his riding of Burnaby, B.C.
Here's what we'll fight to deliver in the first year.
Real steps towards a family doctor for every Canadian.
Universal Pharma Care, national rent control, grocery price caps, a real fix to EI, and
tax relief for working people.
Conservative leader Pierre Polyev is in Richmond, BC talking this past hour about imposing mandatory
drug treatment for those suffering from addiction to illegal narcotics like fentanyl.
This policy is not about punishment, it's about redemption.
It's about getting people off the streets and out of addiction, back into a society where they can live rich, fulfilling lives and take full advantage of the Canadian promise.
Those convicted of possessing small amounts of narcotics but not committing violent offenses
could get treatment instead of prison.
Those who have been sent to prison would be given mandatory drug treatment.
As loved ones gather this Easter weekend, conversations about
politics in the federal election might get heated. Charles McPherson is a
professional butler who teaches manners and protocol. He says the best approach
in these moments is to keep calm and stick to the facts.
I want you to be prepared to be able to talk about a subject intelligently and to
feel confident enough to be able to say at some point,
you know what, it's okay for us to disagree. We don't have to agree. It's okay if we don't agree.
McPherson says if conversations get too intense, it's okay to establish boundaries
and change the subject. A landmark protest in London today.
Because the world we are building is a world of love and freedom.
Several thousand marched outside the UK Supreme Court protesting this week's ruling declaring
only biological females are women under the law.
Trans rights groups warned the judgment could exclude trans women from single sex spaces
like washrooms, hospital wards and sports teams.
The government says the ruling brings clarity but many say it leaves trans people vulnerable
to discrimination and exclusion.
The NHL playoffs get underway today with a pair of games.
The Winnipeg Jets, who finished with the best record
in the league this season, will face off
with the St. Louis Blues in Winnipeg in game one
of their Western Conference Series.
Defenseman Josh Morrissey, a Calgary native,
says he's ready for a high energy game.
For us, being at home here, games one and two,
and being in front of our fans, I mean, it's incredible.
You can feel the energy in the city
whenever we're in the playoffs this time of year,
and you know, just can't wait to hit the ice.
Later today, the Dallas Stars host the Colorado Avalanche
in game one of their Western Conference
playoffs.
You can watch both games on CBC Television.
And that's your World This Hour.
For CBC News, I'm Juliane Hazelwood.
