So Canada, we've got to choose a new prime minister and it's a pretty crucial time.
Even people who don't normally follow politics are trying to figure out what the heck is
going on.
I'm Catherine Cullen, host of The House, and I started a new weekly election show with
two friends and fellow political nerds.
Hello, I'm Daniel Thibault bringing you the Quebec Point de Vu.
I'm Jason Microsoft and Calvary bringing the takes and stakes from the West.
Together, we are House Party, a weekly elections podcast for everyone.
We tackle one big burning question every Wednesday.
Find us in the House's feed wherever you get your podcasts.
From CBC News, the world this hour.
I'm Stephanie Scanderres.
With just days to go before the election, the Conservatives have unveiled their platform.
They are the last party to do it.
Leader Pierre-Pauliev made the announcement just outside Toronto.
He's promising lower taxes and less bureaucracy.
JP Tasker has more.
This is a hopeful message and you know this really is the choice.
Do you want hope for a change or do you want fear?
Conservative leader Pierre-Pauliev is promising tens of billions of dollars in new spending
for tax cuts, housing and the military.
And a government led by him will slash the public service, foreign aid and the CBC to
help pay for it all.
Canadians have been pinching their pennies long enough.
It's time for government to start pinching pennies.
But there's no plan to return to a balanced budget.
Poliev is reporting a $31 billion deficit this year and next.
You're right, we are inheriting a very large liberal deficit.
The platform is also booking revenue from expected economic growth, an unusual practice
not followed by the other parties.
There's also relatively little talk about the US trade war in this document.
Poliev only mentioned President Donald Trump once by name in his remarks.
JP Tasker, CBC News, Vonn, Ontario.
These numbers are a joke.
We aren't in a joke.
We are in the worst crisis of our lives.
The liberal leader with a blunt assessment of the newly minted Conservative platform,
Mark Carney was speaking in Trois-Rivers, Quebec.
Carney says the Conservative plan relies on what he calls phantom growth and fulfilling
their promises would come at the expense of services.
With respect to $10 a day child care, with respect to dental care, farmer care, the approach
is, if you already have it, you can keep it,
but no one else can have it. So we have two types of Canadians. I thought a Canadian was
a Canadian as a Canadian.
Carney also says Poliev has no plan to stand up to U.S. tariffs. He says the conservatives
would give the Americans what they want and hope for the best. Five former members of
Canada's World Junior Hockey team have pleaded not guilty to charges of sexual assault
related to an incident that allegedly took place in 2018 in London, Ontario.
That's where Karen Pauls is as jury selection gets underway.
People started lining up early to get into court.
The players are all here for jury selection, which is scheduled for today and tomorrow.
Daphne Gilbert teaches law at the University of Ottawa.
What it comes down to is asking questions about the extent of the knowledge that each person might have about the trial.
Have they been following the coverage? Have they formed an opinion?
There might be questions about people's feelings about hockey or hockey players
because of the notoriety
around hockey of late in terms of sexual violence.
The players Michael McLeod, Cal Foote, Dylan Dubay, Carter Hart and Alex Formonton
are charged with one count each of sexual assault. McLeod faces an
additional count of being party to the offense. All of them pleaded not guilty
this morning and all will be here for the full eight-week trial. Karen Pauls, CBC News, London,
Ontario. The funeral of Pope Francis will be held on Saturday. The Cardinals also
decided the public viewing of Pope Francis will begin tomorrow in St.
Peter's Basilica. The pontiff died of a stroke yesterday at age 88. Many world
leaders will be attending Saturday's funeral, including U.S. President Donald Trump.
Prince William will attend on behalf of King Charles.
Emergency vehicles rushed to the scene of a deadly attack in India's Kashmir.
Local media say at least 20 people are dead after gunmen shot at tourists
near a resort town in the disputed Himalayan territory. Officials are describing the incident
as a terrorist attack. They're blaming militants who oppose New Delhi's rule. Rebel factions
aim to unite Kashmir, either under Pakistan control or as an independent nation, India seized control of the region in 1989.
And that is your World This Hour. For CBC News, I'm Stephanie Scanderis.
